Senior Zachary Fraielli and sophomore Lucy Young once again proved to be the stars of the Northeastern cross country team when they led the Huskies at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Northeast Regional Championships in Bronx, N.Y. on Friday.

The men’s team finished in 24th place out of 37 teams in the 10K. Going in to the race, they were ranked 11th in the Northeast region. Fraielli earned a time of 31:16.56, good enough for 34th place, a huge jump from his 81st-place finish in last year’s NCAA Northeast Regional Championships. Senior Stephen Sollowin finished in second place for the Huskies and 82nd overall. Syracuse University, Providence College and Iona College were the top three finishing teams.

In the women’s 6K, Northeastern finished in 25th place. Young placed 19th with a time of 20:55.59. She also improved from last year, when she came in at 29th.

“Lucy is an incredibly talented athlete who will contribute at a high level in all three of the sports she competes in: cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field,” Head Coach Cathrine Erickson said in an email to The News. “She has great range and grit as an athlete and we are very proud of how hard she has worked this year and last year.”

Sophomore Jordan O’Dea took home 89th place with a time of 21:54.81. Iona, Providence and Dartmouth College grabbed the top three spots in the women’s race.

The team will travel to New York for the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America/Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday.

After the cross country season ends, many of the runners will prepare for the spring track and field season.

“With the vast majority of our athletes having improved over the course of the last two years, we are looking forward to how well they will compete on the track, in addition to what the young people will contribute next year in cross country,” Erickson said.
