Pinkberry on Newbury creates competition

By: Chelsea Addy

Red Mango, which has existed without direct competition on Massachusetts Avenue since it opened last fall, now has to share its consumers with Pinkberry, a frozen yogurt company that has slowly but surely made its way to Boston all the way from Los Angeles.

Pinkberry opened Nov. 5 at 288 Newbury St., the second location to open in Massachusetts, after a location in Hingham opened in August. The company, which started in 2005, has become a booming business with over 100 stores throughout the country.

Aaron Young, manager of the Pinkberry location on Newbury Street, said that even though temperatures are beginning to fall in Boston, frozen yogurt is still on the radar.

“It just has the grounds to last through the winter,” Young said. “New Englanders are used to the cold.”

Pinkberry joins a city full of frozen treat options. Bon Bon, another sweet shop that features gelato, is located right between Red Mango and Pinkberry, at 197 Massachusetts Avenue. The North End also offers countless pastry shops which serve gelato, such as Napoli Pastry Shop on 120 Salem St.

Ben Berkowitz, a freshman mechanical engineering major, said although he does not see a distinct difference between the two brands, he enjoys many of the qualities of Pinkberry.

“[Pinkberry] is sweet and dessert-like, but still light and refreshing,” Berkowitz said. “My favorite toppings are strawberry, kiwi and blackberry.”

While they both have their similarities, including their color-and-fruit style names, the two frozen yogurt companies have other things which distinguish them as well.

Differences in pricing, flavors and toppings are where their main oppositions lie. The two offer dissimilar other options besides their signature frozen yogurt.

Now both frozen yogurt franchises are located only a few blocks away from one another.

Young is not concerned about Red Mango being so close to Pinkberry. He simply said, “Healthy competition.”
