Boston Police Department (BPD) officers pursued a suspect on foot through Northeastern’s campus on Tuesday evening, prompting an investigation by officers and a canine for a weapon near the West Village dormitories, according to Northeastern University Police Department (NUPD) alerts.

BPD arrested the suspect and no weapons were found at the scene, according to NUPD. The department did not say why the suspect was wanted by officers.

A BPD spokesperson reached Tuesday night said he did not have enough information to comment on the incident.

A BPD cruiser was parked just after 7:30 p.m. on Ruggles Street with its lights flashing. An NUPD cruiser was also parked nearby in the West Village quad.

Northeastern student Ram Rajurajan said he witnessed officers searching near the West Village dormitories.

“I saw them by the signal [at the corner of Huntington Avenue and Ruggles Street]. There were two or three cop cars at the corner. I saw them while driving,” said Rajurajan, a second-year graduate student pursuing a Master of Science in Telecommunication Systems Management.

NUPD first released details of the incident on its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts just after 7 p.m.

“The Boston Police Department responded to a call in their jurisdiction a short while ago near our West Village. That call resulted in a foot chase into West Village,” NUPD wrote on Facebook. “The BPD believe that the suspect, now in custody, may have discarded a weapon during the chase and are searching the area with our officers, all available BPD officers and a canine. We are asking that people avoid the area to allow officers to clearly search.”

NUPD sent an email to students at 7:16 p.m. asking them to avoid the area near West Village, Field Street and Ruggles Street so BPD could complete their search.

“While there is no threat to campus, we ask that you please avoid the area during this time,” NUPD said in the email.

Northeastern University sent a public safety advisory to students via email.

By the end of the hour, NUPD announced that all motor vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians were clear to return to the area and that no weapons had been found.

Thanks for the assistance Huskies!” NUPD wrote on Facebook. “Nice work all.”
