The Huskies got out of their scoring slump Sunday, netting five goals in an overtime loss to Ohio State University at the OSU Ice Rink.
Amy Goodney recorded her first ever hat trick, sending the game into overtime with just 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
Goodney’s previous worries about being in a sophomore slump seemed to be silenced, bringing her goal total to four on the season. OSU’s Jana Harrigan matched Goodney’s play with her own hat trick.
Unfortunately, Harrigan’s third goal proved to be the game winner 2:12 in the extra period.
The Buckeyes scored two goals in the third after trailing 4-3 entering the final period.
Katie Maroney earned her first goal of the season just 45 seconds into the third to tie the game at four. Meaghan Mulvaney gave OSU their first lead three minutes later.
The Huskies had two other players with multipoint games. Crystal Rochon assisted on two of Goodney’s goals and Ashley Bielawski had a goal and an assist.
Marie Desrosiers gave NU the early lead with her first goal of the season coming just 30 seconds into the game. Lindsay Snider earned the assist.
NU went one-for-seven on the power play and was five-for-seven on the penalty kill.
Husky net minder Marisa Hourihan made 32 saves in the loss. Buckeye Melissa Glaser held off 26 shots from the Huskies.
On Saturday, the two teams skated to a 1-1 tie, thanks to Husky Stephanie Wood’s last minute heroics.
Trailing 1-0 for nearly the entire game, Wood netted her second goal of the season with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Goodney and Lori DiGiacomo assisted on the play.
OSU’s Harrigan started her goal scoring for the weekend four minutes into the first period.
The goal, assisted by Amber Bowman and Jeni Creary, was a power play goal. After the weekend was completed, Harrigan had netted her seventh goal of the season.
Hourihan made 28 saves, while OSU’s defense held NU to just 14 shots in the game. Erika Vanderveer was in net for the Buckeyes.
The weekend drops the Huskies to 1-6-1 on the season.
NU returns home to face Hockey East opponent Boston College, Friday night at Matthews Arena. The puck drops at 7p.m.
The Huskies are 0-1-0 in Hockey East play with their first defeat handed to them by the University of New Hampshirr via an 8-0 shutout in Durham, N.H.
