Volleyball frosh shines again Freshman outsider hitter Kira Batura was named the America East Rookie of the Week for the second straight week on Monday. Batura recorded a team-leading tenth double-double (10 kills, 14 digs) against two-time defending AE champions New Hampshire on Saturday in the team’s 3-0 win. Batura, a Downers Grove, Ill., native, has won Rookie of the Week four times throughout the season so far for Northeastern, and has contributed to a total of six honors for the Huskies (freshman setter Bree Peterson has two as well).
Swimming set to host Boston University The Northeastern swimming and diving team will host Boston University on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Barletta Natatorium.The Huskies began their season on Oct. 16 when they hosted the five squad Husky Invitational. University of Connecticut took the top prize with 610 points, but NU was up next with 338.50, followed by Massachusetts (333), Rhode Island (186.50) and Southern Connecticut (331).Freshman Kara Lane raised some eyebrows with a win in the 200-yard fly while placing second in the 100-yard fly. Senior captains Emily Rochefort and Kristen Kane returned in grand fashion as well. Rochefort was second in the 100-yard breast stroke while Kane was second in both the 200-yard IM and 200-yard breast.
Midnight Madness to tip off Basketball season The long wait for college hoops will come to an end as fans will get their first look at the 2004-05 Northeastern basketball teams this Friday night at Midnight Madness. Jose Juan Barea and the men’s team will join Marlene Zwarich and the women’s team at Cabot gym for Midnight Maddness. Along with the much anticipated slam dunk contest, the evening will feature music, food, contests, giveaways, entertainment and the faculty/staff vs. SGA basketball game.
Volleyball wins against Hartford. The Northeastern volleyball team defeated the University of Hartford 3-0 in America East action on Tuesday night at Reich Family Pavilion in Hartford, Conn. The Huskies (16-8, 7-1 America East), winners of five straight and 10 of their last 11 matches, picked up the victory by scores of 30-21, 30-18 and 30-17. The Hawks (5-21, 0-8) dropped their 11th straight match and remain winless in conference action.Brittany Eukovich led a balanced attack for Northeastern with a team-high 10 kills on 23 attempts. Lindsay Feller chipped in with nine kills while Brandie Genibrel recorded a team-high 10 digs. Setters Ivana Pavlisin (20) and Whitney Weinkoop (19) combined for 39 assists.
