Some summer construction projects unfinished as students return to classes

By Zack Sampson, News Staff

Fall is officially under way at Northeastern after thousands of students filed into classes yesterday, but some summer renovation projects are still pending.

As of yesterday, crews were still finishing up work in Blackman Auditorium and Rebecca’s Café in Churchill Hall remained closed as workers continued to overhaul the restaurant’s interior.

University Spokesperson Lucy Warsh said in an email to The News on Wednesday that all projects, including Blackman and Rebecca’s, were complete. Still, the spaces were apparently shut-off to students.

In other areas of campus, like Snell Library, major renovation projects were completed for the start of fall semester.

Despite some delays, Lesley Milner, associate dean of user services, said the construction of two new classrooms and renovations of three existing rooms in the library was finished before classes began Wednesday.

“The classrooms were needed by the university and I thought the construction of them was very quick, and they were able to finish them in time for classes to start,” she said.

The new classrooms will occupy existing areas on the second floor, where student seating was moved to provide space. InfoCommons Two and another instruction room were improved to create two “high-tech media” areas.

Argo Tea, a new specialty dining area that replaced the Cyber Café in Snell Library, is also open for members of the Northeastern community.

Colleen Corgel, Argo Tea’s director of dining services, said many customers have already enjoyed the renovated restaurant space.

“We’ve had really positive student reaction, the space is just warmer, more inviting,” Corgel said. “Everybody, their jaws drop when they come in here.”
Subway, which replaced Mondo Subs in Ryder Hall, was also finished before most students’ arrival on campus last week.

“We’ve seen a very positive reaction from students and faculty,” Shift Supervisor Aaron Nessel said. “[It’s] just because it’s a good space with better quality food and fresh ingredients.”
