Head of alumni relations resigns

By Todd Feathers, News Staff

The head of Northeastern’s alumni relations department resigned from the university last month, in the midst of the largest fundraising campaign in the school’s history.

Jack Moynihan, the former vice president of alumni relations, had been with the university for nine years. His resignation became effective Feb. 28.

Northeastern officials and members of the Board of Trustees declined to comment on the reason for Moynihan’s departure.

“We don’t comment on personnel matters,” university spokeswoman Renata Nyul said.

Moynihan also declined to speak about his resignation. He did, however, show The News a message sent to his staff in which he thanked them for their work.

An e-mail sent to Moynihan’s school address on Feb. 21 generated an automatic reply stating that he was on a “personal leave of absence.”

His Northeastern-affiliated Twitter account, on which he had previously been active on a daily basis, went silent Feb. 10.

The university has tapped former chief financial officer Jack McCarthy to replace Moynihan on an interim basis.

One of his chief responsibilities will be rallying alumni to donate to the Empower fundraising campaign, which, with over $500 million raised, is on schedule to reach its $1 billion goal by 2017.
