After a difficult four-game series against Texas Tech University last weekend in Lubbock, Texas, the Northeastern baseball team was unable to pull off a series win and lost to the No. 10-ranked team, 4-0.

“It was a rough weekend, no doubt about it. Our toughest weekend so far this year,” head coach Mike Glavine said. “I give a ton of credit to Texas Tech — they’re an extremely talented ball club that probably will win 40 games and be knocking on the door for Omaha and the College World Series.”

Going into the weekend, which was an non-conference game during the Huskies’ bye week from CAA play, Glavine said the team was not intimidated by Texas Tech’s reputation and skill level.

“The thing we keep talking about is just to be the best version of ourselves every time we take the field and not worry about who we’re playing,” Glavine said. “We try not to play the uniform, just play the game.”

In their first game on Friday, the Huskies lost to Texas Tech 22-3.

Third-year Jake Farrell produced a double in the fifth inning, batting in two runners. Those were the team’s sole runs, and thirteen runners were left stranded during the game.

On Saturday, the teams played a double-header, and though the scores were closer than their first game, Northeastern still was unable to overcome Texas Tech, losing 12-3 and 13-2.

The final score of the Sunday game was closer, but Northeastern still did not find a win, losing their final game 9-4. Both Farrell and third-year Ryan Solomon hit home runs, batting in the only four runs of the day.

The team takes the disappointing weekend as a learning experience.

“I take away some positives because I know I put the team in an environment that wasn’t friendly and wasn’t easy,” Glavine said. “I really believe that will make us better as we move forward this season.”

Glavine also noted that he was able to rotate every player into the active roster during the the series so the whole team could know what it’s like to play a top-ten team in preparation for their upcoming conference games.

“I was glad that we were able to get experience for our freshmen and all the guys on the team,” he said.

This weekend, the Huskies will play their first conference series at James Madison University after last weekend’s CAA bye, which was the first weekend of conference play. They’ll be headed into conference play with a 12-9 record.

“We’re really excited and we’ve already turned the page on this past weekend,” Glavine said. “It’s like a new start to the season for us to build upon the great things we’ve already done and look forward to this challenge now of getting back into the CAA tournament and hopefully winning the championship.”
