It took two overtimes, but the women’s soccer team came away with a 1-0 win Friday night over host New Hampshire.
Senior forward and captain Liza Rebello netted the game-winner in the 107th minute, which improved the Huskies to 4-1-0 ‘- their only loss coming to No. 18 Georgia Sept. 6 and helped move them to No. 1 in Tuesday’s NCAA Mid-Atlantic regional rankings.
‘ NU also received 42 votes in the national Top-25 poll, which would put them at No. 33 in the country if rankings extended that far.
In Durham, N.H., Friday, the Huskies battled through the first 90 minutes of regulation to a scoreless tie, and neither team found the back of the net in the first overtime. Northeastern held the advantage through most of the game, outshooting UNH 22-12 (including eight shots on goal to four) and taking eight corner kicks to the Wildcats’ four. In the second overtime, freshman forward Sandra Magnusdottir took a corner that sophomore midfielder Kelly Matthews headed into the crossbar. The ball bounced off in front of the goal and Rebello was there to head it into the right side of the net for the score, and the victory.
Matthews and Magnusdottir were each credited with their firsts assists of the year on Rebello’s tally, her second goal this season.
‘I didn’t think we started the game like we normally do and were a little bit flat in the first half,’ head coach Ed Matz said. ‘But then we came out and played a much better second half, we didn’t get frustrated. I like that my team didn’t get frustrated and kept on the pressure the whole game.’
The team has struggled on corner kicks this season, and Matz said he was pleased his team used one to win.
‘ ‘One of our traits over these last few games was that we find a way to win, and I told them ‘you guys need to find a way to win, however that is,’ and they did,’ he said. ‘The other thing I told them was that on corners and free kicks we need to capitalize, and we did just that. We found a way to win by capitalizing on a corner.’
Sophomore keeper Stephanie Gordon continued her excellent play early in the season, recording four saves in her third shutout of the season. She kept the Huskies’ hopes alive in the 60th minute, making a key diving save to hold the Wildcats at bay.
The Huskies will next face cross-town rivals BU at Parsons Field Friday at 6 p.m. Matz said in order beat the Terriers, his team must play a complete game without letdown like they had to start the season.
‘ ‘We need to match their aggressiveness and their momentum and their intensity that they play with for 90 minutes,’ he said. ‘We need to play like we did against Georgia and Clemson.’
