Nadine Aubry, dean of the College of Engineering since 2012, has been appointed the new provost of Tufts University. The assignment officially begins on July 1.

Bárbara Brizuela, the dean of academic affairs for the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts and chair of their search committee, wrote in an email to The News on March 11 that Aubry has demonstrated success as an academic officer and in overseeing research.

“Dr. Aubry stood out from the rest of the candidates given her proven record of outstanding scholarship, academic innovation and support for research excellence,” Brizuela wrote.

Brizuela said she anticipates Aubry will be a good fit for Tufts.

“[Aubry] embraces Tufts University’s long-standing commitment to civic engagement, shares our belief in the power of higher education and also understands the challenges higher education in the country currently faces,” Brizuela said.

According to an email sent to Northeastern staff members on Jan. 22, Aubry “brought the College of Engineering to new levels of excellence in teaching and research” through an increase in interdisciplinary degree and certificate programs within the College of Engineering.

The NU faculty handbook states that the search for an new academic dean requires a formal search committee. The Feb. 27 Faculty Senate meeting minutes list the members of a search committee chaired by Lee Makowski, a bioengineering professor and the department chair. The committee will develop a list of potential candidates and interview them before presenting a final report to the provost.

Provost James Bean said in the email to NU staff that he will work with college leadership to appoint an interim dean as needed.
