With trends cycling faster than ever, it’s impossible to know which ones have the power to make it to Halloween. Ten months into the year, we’ve had a lot of great (and not so great) movies and TV shows, as well as some enduringly viral internet moments. So, what will the young and hip tap into for their costumes this year? We have a few predictions.
Couples costumes
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s highly publicized engagement has given Swifties a lot to talk about — but nothing in particular to wear. Die-hard fans may try to mimic the couple’s engagement photoshoot outfits, but for a more recognizable costume, young couples might think of Kelce’s Chiefs uniform and Swift’s viral game outfits from last season — short shorts and tall leather boots, which lend themselves well to parties anyway. Depending on the weather, amateur seamstresses might cut up Chiefs jerseys to show a little more skin, but red sweatshirts and fleece-lined tights are a safer bet.
The Coldplay couple
In July, an extramarital couple got caught canoodling on the KissCam at a Coldplay concert, and the viral video of them sparked conversations about workplace relationships and shrinking privacy in the digital age. People love to revive internet memes for Halloween costumes, and this costume has the benefit of being easy and a little bit clever — a perfect last-minute idea for couples who don’t mind their costumes being unrecognizable.
“KPop Demon Hunters”
When the most annoying couple you know rolls up with reddish-purple streaks painted on their arms, you know they are dressed as Jinu and Rumi, the star-crossed pop power duo from “KPop Demon Hunters.” After becoming Netflix’s most-watched original movie, the blockbuster will inspire tweens and 20-somethings alike to show their love for their significant others in leather shorts and skinny jeans. It’s an easy costume to pull off — especially for boyfriends, which is a bonus for many couples.
“Wicked”
We don’t want to play it too safe, so here’s an oddball prediction. With “Wicked: For Good” premiering in November, parties will inevitably be packed with black lace and pink tulle for the second year in a row. But after so many months of “Wicked” buzz, fans will have to put a little twist on their costumes this go around. Cue the Glinda and Elphaba couples costume. It’s identical to last year’s Glinda and Elphaba best friends costume, just better.
Individual costumes
Tyler, the Creator
From “IGOR” to his most recent projects, Tyler, The Creator has sported many iconic looks. Some may go all out with a light blue suit and blonde wig, while other looks can be recreated with typical closet items. Bonus points if you have a friend dress up as A$AP Rocky or Doechii. But no matter what, it’s clear this costume needs effort. Tyler is one of the most creative and outlandish artists of our generation, and costumes have to reflect his style and passion to get it right.
“Sinners”
Besides making $366 million at the box office, the movie Sinners granted us an array of distinct 1930s-inspired costumes. At the end of the month, expect party-goers to peel off their coats to reveal bloodstained white tank tops and pink dresses. Hopefully some Huskies will be brave enough to embrace the newsboy cap.
The Lorax
It’s 2025 — sexy costumes are out, and funny costumes are in. Why is the Lorax trending right now? We don’t know, but if you see someone dressed head-to-toe in neon orange, just know they speak for the trees. Anyone hoping to surprise their friends with their costume’s originality will be disappointed to hear that searches for “The Lorax” spiked in the first week of October. If you do opt for this off-kilter costume and your mustache falls off, just say you’re the Orange Line.
“Freaky Friday”
This year’s “Freaky Friday” sequel, “Freakier Friday,” had the cultural relevance but not the iconic outfits to inspire any costumes. So, those who had their interest in the original rekindled this year will just don the same classic “Freaky Friday” costumes their forebears have been rocking since 2003: red plaid, denim jackets and inside-out baseball tees. This would also work as a double’s costume if someone is willing to rock a skirt suit.
Group costumes
“The Summer I Turned Pretty”
We take back what we said about the “KPop Demon Hunters” costume. The most annoying couple you know will be dressed as Belly and whichever brother she should have ended up with. But what elevates this from a couples costume is a wide cast of romantically entangled characters, which gives friend groups the opportunity to fight over their favorites. Characters in “The Summer I Turned Pretty” wear a lot of beachy casual, so you probably already have something in your closet that can act as a costume for at least one of them.
Performative males
Come Oct. 31, packs of performative males with carabiners clipped to baggy jeans will roam the streets clutching copies of “The White Album” and cracking jokes about matcha lattes. After September’s wave of performative male competitions on college campuses — and corresponding thinkpieces — the trend will have overstayed its welcome come Halloween, but that won’t deter college boys who want to show how ironically attention seeking they are.
“Lemonade Mouth”
“Lemonade Mouth” is a classic Disney Channel movie that reminds us of better times and is a perfect group costume no matter how many people are in your group. Childhood favorite movies are always go-tos for Halloween inspiration, and after the cast reunion in August, this is a pretty safe prediction. Good luck fighting for the character you want, and sorry to all the gingers who will get typecasted as Wes this year.
As we get older, we see fewer scary costumes and more references that only the chronically online will understand. Maybe the current state of the world is scary enough, and people would rather have a good laugh than a scare on Halloween. Will 2025 continue this trend or give us a jump scare?
