Editorial: time to talk about guns

August 2, 2012
Following recent events, Americans need to have a serious discussion about the delicate balance between safety and liberties when it comes to firearms. This is a conversation that has been necessary for years, but now, two weeks after one of the worst mass shootings in American history, it’s unavoidable.

Column: focus on food, not politics

August 1, 2012
If Chick-fil-A opened a restaurant in Boston, I wouldn't care. Hell, if I were feeling masochistic and was in the area, I might even pick up a chicken sandwich.

Editorial: IDEA redefines experiential education

July 18, 2012
Everyone who has ever had anything to do with Northeastern knows the university specializes in “experiential education.” It’s a buzz phrase that administrators and faculty alike have never been shy to throw out in support of their institution. This week, the phrase took greater shape. On Monday, IDEA, Northeastern’s new venture accelerator, officially launched its first six startups. IDEA is funded by alumni, in the form of $10,000 grants to each startup. The money, of course, is only granted after the startups’ business plans have been thoroughly reviewed – and approved – by student managers and alumni.

Column: Trees are nice but drinks are better

July 18, 2012
I've been asking myself "why?" a lot lately. Why is this guy I graduated high school with uploading selfies to Facebook from a Planet Fitness bathroom? Why am I still Facebook friends with him? Why does the homeless man picking through the trash outside where I work have a fedora but no underwear? Why does a passing mention of the E line fill me with nameless dread? Why does Gawker exist? It's only 2 a.m., why is this bar kicking me out? The only question I even want answered is the last one. Unfortunately, the answer is lame. When it comes to food and drink, Boston just kind of sucks.

Column: Over prepared for the real world

July 18, 2012
Welcome to Summer II. All at once, resume files across campus open to be edited as the co-op cycle switches. I don’t have to tell anyone reading this that it’s the resumes we graduate with, a direct result of the co-op program, that sets our university apart from others. It’s also each individual item on our resumes – sometimes spilling onto a second page, no matter how hard we try to cut down – that allow many of us to have jobs lined up for the Monday following the commencement ceremonies at the TD Garden.

Letter: Student Affairs usurps control of SAF, silences student voice

July 6, 2012
The Finance Board, the body that undergrads trust to allocate funds in an unbiased and most practical manner, voted not to grant stipends to any student group for the upcoming year – including SGA. Student Affairs has, without any input of students, overturned the board’s decision and granted stipends in the amount of $27,775 to a total of nine students – effectively allowing for undergraduate money to be allocated at the will of the administration and NOT the student body, which runs 100 percent counter to the mission of the Student Activity Fee (SAF).

Column: Pick your battles

July 5, 2012
Dumb fights prove not only that human nature has designed us to stand up for what we believe in, but also make it blatantly obvious we need to start thinking before we speak.

Editorial: Administration should allow Finance Board to do its job

July 5, 2012
The Finance Board is a democratic institution, administered by the democratic rules of the SGA, and should be respected as such. The rules of the Finance Board state an appeal can only be made if a decision is arbitrary, if the Finance Board didn’t follow procedure or if too strict a punishment was handed down. Barring a serious practical or factual error, the administration should respect the rules and decisions of the Finance Board.

Editorial: With T hikes looming, Northeastern should address students’ burden

June 20, 2012

In early April, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Board of Directors approved incommodious service cuts and fare hikes, effective July 1. The 23 percent fare increase and host of service reductions are part of the MBTA’s proposal to reduce its $185 million...
