The women’s hockey team outshot opponents University of New Hampshire and Providence College 79-58 this weekend. Despite the efforts, the Huskies came up short dropping both games.
The No. 9 Huskies dropped to 13-8-4 on the season after losing to Providence 2-1 Sunday, and UNH 4-3 in overtime Saturday.
“I think we just have to realize that we are going to face a lot of adversity down the stretch and it’s not going to be easy all the time,” senior forward Lori Antflick said. “When the puck doesn’t go in the net right away we just have to keep going after it. If we do that, then eventually good things will happen.”
In Saturday’s game against UNH, the Huskies’ dropped their first overtime loss of the season.
UNH took a 2-0 lead 14:52 into first stanza, courtesy of goals by forwards Kristina Lavoie and Sara (Sarah) Campbell.
But just two minutes later, Northeastern’s senior forward Kristi Kehoe put the puck past goaltender Kayley Herman to cut the deficit in half.
In the second period, the Huskies’ successfully killed off a 5-on-3 Wildcat power play, and sophomore forward Rachel Llanes tied the score 2-2 after snapping one past Herman. Senior forward Alyssa Wohlfeiler and freshman forward Claire Santostefano assisted the score.
The game remained tied into the third period, but Wildcats forward Arielle O’Neill put her team up 3-2.
However, Antflick responded with a goal of her own four minutes later.
“It was a team effort … everyone did everything they had to do, and I was just standing there in the right place at the right time and it happened to go in the net,” Antflick said.
The two teams remained deadlocked until time expired, and extra frames were required to decide the contest.
However, overtime didn’t last long as UNH forward Courtney Birchard netted a goal 16 seconds into overtime.
Against Providence, senior defenseman Julia Marty scored the only Husky goal of the game, assisted by freshman forward Katie MacSorley. The goal was Marty’s fourth of the season, and MacSorely notched her fourth assist. The freshman has had an impressive campaign thus far and is second on the team with 15 points.
“We have been talking a lot about driving into the net during practice,” Marty said. “I took the empty room in front and MacSorley passed it right to me.”
However, Providence responded with their first goal of the contest 12:23 into the first period.
Both teams played a scoreless second period thanks to the outstanding goaltending on both fronts. Northeastern goaltender junior Florence Schelling made 10 saves in the period, while opposing goaltender, Genevieve Lacasse, blocked 14.
But the Friars made their way past Schelling 2:24 into the final stanza, taking a 2-1 lead. The Huskies were unable to pull ahead.
The Huskies resume action Friday at 7 p.m. in Burlington, Vt. to battle the University of Vermont.
