Senior forward Steve Silva is tied for league lead in postseason points for the Hockey East Association with six points, three goals and three assists. He also has scored at least one point in the past six games, a career-best streak.
Silva’s performance has earned him Huntington News Player of the Week honors.
“The last five games really got my confidence up,” Silva said. “I scored a couple of games before finals and the momentum is carrying me into play in the finals.”
Silva has played 34 games and scored eight goals this season, while recording 16 assists and 24 total points.
He has also had six multi-point games this season and 16 in his collegiate career.
Silva said he is excited to be playing in the Hockey East semi-finals against No. 1 Boston College tomorrow at the TD Garden.
This will be his second trip to the Garden for the semi-finals. The first was during the 2008-09 season, when the team lost to UMass Lowell 3-2.
“We’ve been saying all week that we’ve got to get back there,” Silva said. “We’re going to finish what we came to do.”
Both the semi-final game and getting to the NCAA tournament during his sophomore season made it to Silva’s list of highlights from his hockey career at Northeastern. The third major highlight was the Beanpot tournament this February.
“It was one of the funnest games I’ve played,” he said. “But unfortunately, we didn’t win.”
The Tyngsboro native has been skating since he was three years old and playing organized hockey since he was five.
His father is a big hockey fan, he said, and originally got him interested in the sport. But hockey was not the only sport that Silva played growing up – he also played varsity baseball in high school.
“Growing up, I liked hockey better – it has always been my sport,” Silva said. “Baseball was another sport to play for the off season, but hockey has always been my first choice.”
After attending the Tabor Academy in Marian, he moved to Wisconsin to play in the US Hockey League (USHL). There, Silva played two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers and finished high school at Ashwaubenon in Green Bay.
During his second season with the Gamblers, Silva earned USHL All-Star honors and was twice named Player of the Week.
Like many of his teammates, Silva said he enjoys relaxing and playing video games during the small amount of downtime that he receives. He also likes going to the movies and fishing whenever he gets the chance.
Silva is studying business management at Northeastern and is looking at different possibilities for after graduation.
“I’m waiting to see what is going on at the end of the season. [Continuing hockey] is a possibility, but I want to weigh out my best options,” Silva said.
The rest of the season for the team now depends on the outcome of each game.
“We’re in a position where if we win we move on, and if not we go home,” Silva said. “This gives me more motivation to give it all and keep playing.”
Silva is one of five seniors on the team who are staring at the possibility that their next game could be their last. However, he noted the team has been playing well since returning from spring break.
“We haven’t looked back, we just focus on the next game coming up,” Silva said.
The next game, in this case, is the Hockey East tournament semi-finals. The team is hoping to get revenge on Boston College tomorrow night after their last meeting at the Garden for the Beanpot tournament.
“We’re going to get them on Friday,” Silva said.
