Kayla Fosse first wore a feather extension in her hair last summer, when her friend Janelle Jee brought her to a booth at the Wakura Music Festival in Arkansas. It was love at first sight.
“In Arkansas, when Janelle took me to the FeatherLuxe booth, we became even more obsessed with the beautiful feathers,” Fosse said. “I fell in love and got my first bundle.”
Fosse and Jee now run KayJee Feather Designs out of their Allston apartment. Fosse said they began by putting in feathers in their own hair last fall and eventually started charging when they saw the trend catch on.
The small but distinguishable accessory has been popping up in the hair of celebrities from Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler to actress Jennifer Love Hewitt and on heads across the country.
May Babraitis, a sophomore communications major, said she got one black feather in her brown hair for $20 at Mizu Salon in the Prudential Center after seeing a friend’s roommate with one.
“I like it because it’s subtle but it still makes a statement,” she said. “It’s pretty sturdy. I get a lot of compliments on it.”
KayJee Feather Designs charges $20 for four feathers and $28 for eight feathers. Savas Studios, located in the North End at 456 Hanover St., charges $45 for a cluster of seven feathers.
