The win was the Huskies fourth straight, and they sit fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with a 10-5 record (3-2 in conference play).
“The team came out and played strong,” head coach Cheryl Murtagh said. “I thought it was a good performance, especially defensively. The players all stepped up. This is the kind of game that we need at this point in the season.”
The first half of the game was completely defensive as Northeastern had seven shots, with two on goal. BC had five shots, but none made it on net and the first half ended 0-0.
Senior forward Annie Clayman changed that quickly when she scored just 1:10 into the second half off of a pass from senior midfielder Kaela Barker. BC got a shot past junior goalkeeper Lizzie Priest six minutes later but it was disallowed as it did not hit the board. BC’s freshman Emma Plasteras eventually tied the score at the 50:49 mark.
Northeastern outshot the Eagles in the second half 8-5, yet the 1-1 score carried into the first period of overtime.
The Eagles kept the ball in their offensive zone for most of the first overtime period and outshot the Huskies 4-3. However, the second half was the exact opposite as the Huskies made the only two shots, one of which was Poland’s winning goal.
The goal was Poland’s 21st of the season. She now has 45 points and is leading the CAA with 94 shots.
It was also Malloy’s 12th assist and Graham’s 11th. Malloy and Graham are ranked second and third respectively in the CAA for assists.
Malloy attributed her success this year to her new position as a midfielder. She played forward for the past three years and is now enjoying both ends of the game.
“Instead of just waiting for the ball to come to me, I have more chances to move the ball myself,” she said.
The team said they were excited about their win over BC.
“It was a really big win for us,” Malloy said. “It was my goal as a senior to beat BC because it was my last chance. It has always been a close game.”
The Huskies are now preparing take on the Hofstra University Pride, who are currently ranked second in the CAA, one spot above Northeastern. The matchup will take place Friday when they travel to Hempstead, NY.
“Hofstra is a big scoring team,” Murtagh said. “This is definitely a big game for us. These have been a good couple of weeks for us and the team is ready.”
Malloy is hoping the team will continue its winning streak against Hofstra University and then again when they face Boston University Sunday.
“I want to win the rest of the games, make it to CAA and hopefully win,” she said. “It would be awesome to win a CAA championship my senior year.”
