Saturday’s win was the Huskies’ 11th sweep of the season. They dominated the Pride in the first three sets, winning 25-23, 25-16 and 25-21, respectively. Northeastern is now 6-2 in conference play this season.
“It’s very accomplishing and feels amazing,” sophomore outside hitter Kelly Bacon said.
The Huskies previously lost to Hofstra in the first conference match this season after numerous mistakes and unforced errors, but this weekend, head coach Ken Nichols said the girls stepped up and did a better job finishing off the match.
“Our defense was a lot better than the last time we played them,” he said.
Freshman setter Jillian Briner said the team’s mistakes were limited this past game compared to the last time they played Hofstra.
“We definitely executed game plan better,” said Briner, who had 12 assists, seven digs, four kills and two aces. “We didn’t hit the ball out as much, didn’t miss our serves and won the long rallies. Usually the team that wins the long rallies wins the match.”
In the first set, the Huskies trailed Hofstra 11-5 but later tied the set on three different occasions. Following a kill by junior middle hitter Nicole Bishop and an attacking error committed by the Pride at 23-23, the Huskies finished the match at a close 25-23.
Northeastern broke from an 8-8 tie during the second set and the Pride was only able to bring the score within two points from each other at 14-12, before Northeastern sealed it at 25-16.
The Huskies offense shone in the second half of the third set as Northeastern took a 14-11 a lead over Hofstra. At one point, Hofstra was in the lead at 21- 20, but the Huskies earned the last five points and won the set 25-21.
Freshman libero and outside hitter Natalia Skiba was named CAA Rookie of the Week having had 20 digs this past weekend. Skiba is now averaging 5.32 digs a set, a conference-best.
Although sophomore outside hitter Janelle Tucker was able to push through the pain of a wrist injury in the first two matches, she did not start or play in the third set at all.
“It was tough not having Janelle in the third game but everyone stepped up and played harder,” Bacon said “It was a team effort, that’s for sure.”
Northeastern will play its last two home games of the season tomorrow against the College of William & Mary and Saturday against Virginia Commonwealth University at Solomon Court.
