Many bizarre food holidays are celebrated throughout the year, but pancake lovers finally have an entire week to devour as many short stacks as they please.
National Pancake Week has returned once again Feb. 19 through 25. Students can celebrate by heading to a number of area restaurants.
Although Mike’s City Diner at 1714 Washington St. in the South End will not be doing anything special for the food holiday, the ’50s inspired diner serves pancakes from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Buttermilk pancakes are offered in sets of two or three for $4.50 and $4.95, respectively. Try fruit toppings like bananas or blueberries for $1.95 each.
Paramount at 44 Charles St. in Beacon Hill features an extensive array of pancakes, including buttermilk for $6 or chocolate chip, banana or apple pancakes for $7.50, and strawberry or blueberry for an additional dollar. Other varieties include M&M pancakes.
Christina Chiu, a freshman business major, said she would be willing to try a more unique short stack in honor of the food holiday.
“I’m a big fan of natural fruit toppings when it comes to pancakes, but if it’s just for one week, I would think about trying the M&M pancake or some other crazy topping,” Chiu said.
Paramount serves breakfast until 4:30 p.m.
If students are looking for pancakes late at night, South Street Diner is Boston’s only seven day a week, 24-hour diner and has plenty of options to choose from.
Located around the corner from South Station at 178 Kneeland St., South Street Diner has pancakes which could be shared by two people. Buttermilk pancakes are $8. Fruit toppings are an additional dollar.
Monday through Thursday, the diner offers a 10 percent discount to students from a Boston-area college through its “student zone” program. The diner randomly selects a day for a specific college, so check out the restaurant’s website at www.southstreetdiner.com to see when the discount will be offered to Northeastern students.
South Street Diner also accepts dining dollars.
For something a little different, check out Sweet at 49 Massachusetts Ave. A short walk from campus, Sweet has buttermilk and blueberry pancake flavored cupcakes. These cupcakes are winter specials, and are only available until March.
Shalee Crandal, a sales associate at Sweet, said the cupcake is made out of pancake mix and has maple frosting.
“It’s one of our best sellers,” Crandal said.
Gabriel Azubuike, a freshman health sciences major, said he would be willing to try the concoction.
“I would like to try the cupcakes only to see if they actually taste like pancakes,” Azubuike said. “It’s unique. I’ve never heard of a pancake cupcake before.”
For a more traditional experience, try celebrating Pancake Week at IHOP, which has marked the holiday every year since 2006 and has locations in Brighton and Harvard Square. On Feb. 28, the chain will offer one free short stack to every customer all day. The Harvard Square IHOP at 16 Eliot St. #18 will be serving fresh pancakes until 4 a.m.
Although the holiday is somewhat obscure, several students said they are interested in trying it out this year. Elizabeth Stanley, a senior nursing major, said she had not heard of the holiday before but will consider celebrating it.
“I would be inclined to visit a diner this week more than any other week to check out some deals on pancakes,” she said.
