With the 2012 regular season only weeks – or even days – away for most Northeastern fall sports teams, The Huntington News has compiled a list of each team’s high-profile games so all Northeastern fans have the opportunity to see the Huskies in action on some of their sport’s biggest stages. (Note: The men’s and women’s rowing and men’s and women’s basketball teams have not yet released their 2012-13 regular season schedules).
Cross country
Season-opener/must-see meet:
– Sept. 8: Nassaney Invitational, Bryant University (Smithfield, R.I.), time TBA
In its closest meet to Boston, the cross country team will run its first of three meets leading up to the postseason. The Nassaney Invitational will also be the team’s first meet under its new head coach, who has not yet been named.
Field Hockey
Season-opener:
– Aug. 24: at University of Louisville, 6 p.m.
Home-opener:
– Sept. 21: William & Mary, Jordan Field @ Harvard, 7 p.m.
Must-see game:
– Sept. 23: Old Dominion University, Field Hockey Field @ Boston College, 1 p.m.
Northeastern will welcome Old Dominion for a rematch of the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship game, which the Monarchs won 5-1.
Editor’s note: This original stated that home games would be played at Sweeney Field, which is incorrect. Home games this season are being spilt between Jordan Field at Harvard University, Field Hockey Field at Boston College and Memorial Field at University of New Hampshire.
Ice Hockey
Men’s
Season-opener:
– Oct. 7: St. Francis Xavier (scrimmage), Matthews Arena, 2 p.m.
Home-opener:
– Oct. 10: Merrimack College, Matthews Arena, 7 p.m.
Must-see games:
– Jan. 19, 2013: Boston College, Matthews Arena, 7 p.m.
The Huskies will face the defending NCAA champion Eagles in their third and final regular-season meeting of the 2012-13 season as the hunt for the postseason heats up.
– Feb. 4, 2013: Boston University, Beanpot Championship, TD Garden, time TBA
Northeastern will look to avenge its fourth-place finish in the 2012 Beanpot with a first-round match-up against crosstown rival Boston University. The last time the two sides met in the first round of the Beanpot in 2010, the Terriers came out on top, 2-1.
Women’s
Season-opener:
– Sept. 29: Boston Blades (exhibition), Matthews Arena, 2 p.m.
– Oct. 5: at Colgate University, 7 p.m. (regular season)
Home-opener:
– Oct. 12: Union College, Matthews Arena, 7 p.m.
Must-see game:
– Feb. 5, 2013: Boston University, Matthews Arena, 8 p.m.
The Huskies will look to defend their Beanpot title at home in a first-round rematch of the 2012 championship game against arch nemesis BU.
Soccer
Men’s
Season-opener:
– Aug. 24: Providence College, Parsons Field, 6 p.m.
Must-see game:
– Oct. 6: James Madison University, Parsons Field, 1 p.m.
The Dukes, who finished 2011 ranked No. 20 in the NCAA and are ranked No. 19 to begin 2012, come to Boston for a crucial mid-season clash with the Huskies.
Women’s
Season-opener:
– Aug. 19: Boston University, Parsons Field, 6 p.m.
Must-see game:
– Oct. 14: George Mason University, Parsons Field, 12 p.m.
Northeastern will celebrate its seniors and hope to secure a postseason berth in the final home game of the 2012 season against George Mason.
Swimming & Diving
Home-opener/must-see game:
– Oct. 6: Red vs. Black Intrasquad meet, Barletta Natatorium, 9 a.m.
The Huskies will put their talents on display for the first time in the 2012-13 season as they compete against their teammates in Northeastern’s home pool.
Regular season-opener:
– Oct. 27: University of New Hampshire, Barletta Natatorium, 12 p.m.
Volleyball
Season-opener:
– Aug. 24: University of Alabama, Beanpot Classic (Worcester), 4 p.m.
Home-opener:
– Aug. 25: College of the Holy Cross, Beanpot Classic (Solomon Court), 11 a.m.
Must-see match:
– Aug. 25: Sacred Heart University, Beanpot Classic (Solomon Court), 7 p.m.
The Huskies, picked to win the CAA title in the preseason coaches’ poll, will take on 2011 NCAA tournament team Sacred Heart in the conclusion of the Beanpot Classic.
