Three individual Husky wins highlighted the Northeastern track team’s performance at the New England Championships last weekend at Boston University. Both the men’s and women’s squads posted top 10 team finishes as athletes recorded new personal bests.
The men’s side scored a total of 74 points and finished third out of the field of 32 teams. The University of Connecticut captured the top spot and the University of Rhode Island finished second.
Juniors Eric Jenkins and Kaylin Miranda each earned 10 points towards Northeastern’s team total with individual victories in their respective events. Jenkins won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:24.80 and Miranda won the long jump with a leap of 7.19 meters.
“I had a pretty good performance,” Miranda said. “It felt good to finally win after I got second or third the past few years.”
Freshman Kevin Hunter added eight points to the Huskies’ team total and finished second in the 500-meter dash with a personal best time of 1:03.27. Sophomore Jared Lane achieved a new personal best and took the second spot in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.09 seconds. Junior Max Milder finished third in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 18.34 meters. Senior Tejorn Davis also recorded a personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 14.62 meters, good for a fourth-place finish.
Rounding out the scoring for Northeastern were sophomore Stephen Sollowin and junior Brian Doyle, who finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run. Junior Alex Shapiro earned six points for the team and finished third in the 400-meter dash. The distance medley relay team finished fourth and the 4×400-meter relay team finished sixth.
Miranda said that the team’s overall performance was “awesome.”
“There were a bunch of PRs [personal records],” he said. “It felt good to end the season on a high note.”
The women’s side finished eighth out of 36 teams, led by graduate student Nia Howard’s first-place mark of 5.94 meters in the long jump. UConn also took the top spot in the women’s team scoring, with Providence College finishing second and the College of the Holy Cross taking third.
Freshman Jocelyn Hubbard finished second in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 2:11.34. In the pole vault, senior Jillena Decarteret tied for second place with a mark of 3.70 meters. Sophomore Jessica Dunnigan took the sixth spot in the long jump with a leap of 5.53 meters.
Freshman Camille Gooden contributed to the team scoring with a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.97 seconds, a new personal best. Junior Chelsea Hudson’s time of 57.66 seconds was good for eighth place. Sophomore Victoria Alexander finished eighth in the 200-meter dash. She also recorded a personal best in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.80 seconds and finished 10th.
“From a team standpoint, everything is really coming together,” Catherine Erickson, director of track & field and cross country, said. “We’re excited for the outdoor season.”
The Huskies, who have achieved qualifying times and marks during the regular season, are back in action this weekend at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) competitions.
Miranda will compete in the long jump at the IC4A championships. He is currently ranked ninth on Northeastern’s all time long jump performance list.
“It’s my last indoor meet,” he said. “I want to break the school record, and I’m looking to qualify for the NCAA nationals.”
