Men’s track team takes team title

By Emily McCarthy, News Correspondent

The Northeastern track teams traveled to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst on Saturday, and in the Minuteman Invitational, it was the Northeastern men who came out on top. Of the field of 14 teams, the men finished first with a team title while the women’s squad finished fourth overall.

The men’s win came with a total of 110.5 points. Williams College trailed in second place and Central Connecticut State University came in third.

Northeastern throwers led the scoring charge as juniors Max Milder and Conor Ebbs earned individual victories in the hammer throw and discus.

Milder won the hammer throw with a New England and Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) qualifying mark of 57.12 meters. Junior James Hall took the second spot with a throw of 51.92 meters.

Ebbs won the discus with a throw of 44.93 meters. Milder came in third with a new personal best mark at 42.67 meters.

In the shot put, junior Kevin Rosenberg finished second and senior Mark Mastone finished third.

The Huskies also found success on the track, led by sophomore Jared Lane who placed in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes.

Lane took second in the 100-meter dash with a personal best time of 10.98 seconds. Lane said it was his first time running in the event.

“I was pretty excited with my 100-meter time,” he said. “I was nervous going into it. My goal was 11 seconds, so I was happy to break that.”

Lane also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a New England and IC4A qualifying time of 21.79 seconds.

Freshman Donovan Henry finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.09 seconds, good for a new personal best. Junior Alex Shapiro finished fifth and junior Joshua Norris finished eighth.

Juniors Kaylin Miranda and Jackson MacDonald took the second and third spots, respectively, in the long jump to round out the scoring for the Huskies. Senior Tejorn Davis finished second in the triple jump.

The women’s side finished fourth out of the field of 19 teams with a total of 72.5 points. The University of Connecticut took the top spot while Boston College finished second and UMass third.

The Huskies’ scoring was led by junior Chelsea Hudson’s individual victory in the 400-meter hurdles. She finished with a New England qualifying time of 1:02.61.

Hudson said she “felt pretty confident” at the meet and was happy with the win, but said she still needs to work to achieve her season goals.

“I have been stuck at 62 seconds at every meet,” Hudson said. “I’m looking to break that. I want at least 60 or 61. To qualify for NCAA Regionals I need around 59.9, which is a little farther.”

Graduate student Nia Howard finished second in the 100-meter dash with a New England qualifying time of 12.48 seconds. Freshman Camille Gooden finished third in the 400-meter dash.

Freshman Jocelyn Hubbard and senior Eryn Wheeler finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 800-meter run.

Senior Jillena DeCarteret finished third in the pole vault with a New England qualifying mark of 3.55 meters. Graduate student took the fourth spot and freshman Jacilyn Briggs came in sixth.

Rounding out the scoring for Northeastern was junior Georgia Pingue who finished fourth in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. She qualified for the New England championships in both events.

Lane said that he felt the team had an overall successful meet.

“Our entire team as a whole had really great performances,” he said. “It was a good way to set the tone heading into championship season.”

The Huskies will be back in action Saturday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Spring Invitational.
