The men’s and women’s cross country teams continued their 2013 success Saturday when they traveled to Iona College and finished within the top 10 teams at the Br. Doyle Iona Meet of Champions.
The men’s side finished seventh overall out of the competitive field of 20 teams.
Sophomore Wesley Gallagher took the top spot for Northeastern and finished seventh overall out of 207 runners. He ran the 8K course in 25:43.15.
“I felt comfortable for most of the race,” Gallagher said in an email to the News. “The first mile was a little shock to the system but after that I was able to settle in. Then around the last mile I picked it up a bit and tried to pass as many people as possible.”
Junior Zachary Fraielli finished 21st overall with a time of 26:13.45. Sophomore Zach Krause rounded out the Huskies’ scoring with a 32nd-place finish in 26:27.16.
“Overall I believe the team had a good day,” Gallagher said. “We had a good top three spread but one of our top guys didn’t have the race he was hoping for. But even with that I think overall it was a great performance.”
The women’s team also posted a top-10 finish, capturing ninth place out of 20 teams.
In her first race in a Northeastern uniform, freshman Lucy Young led the way for the Huskies, finishing eighth overall out of 190 runners with a time of 22:54.18 for the 6K course.
“I felt good during the race,” Young said in an email to the News. “Being on the very inside of the field of 190 I was really nervous about the start but luckily got a good start and was up with the leaders in the first two one-mile laps… The up and down hills were tough but I knew that the last kilometer after the loop was mostly downhill so I knew I really had to work and push through the hills.”
Freshman Jordan O’Dea finished second for the Huskies and 28th overall in 23:43.80. Senior Danielle Klein finished 37th overall in 23:58.75. With a time of 24:08.37, sophomore Jocelyn Hubbard completed Northeastern’s scoring and finished 47th overall.
Young, who hails from Brisbane, Australia, said she really enjoyed her first race in the U.S. and is excited for the rest of the season.
“I have really enjoyed my freshman season so far,” she said. “I love the training and the team and running around Boston.”
The Huskies will race close to home on Friday as they make the short trip to Franklin Park and compete in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown hosted by Boston College.
