Frequently dubbed the go-to shopping area for many Back Bay residents, Newbury Street is continually crowded with shoppers, from the usual group of college students to the occasional cluster of tourists.
What makes Newbury Street an exciting area to shop for many is the wide-ranging selection of household brands that inhabit the row of brownstone storefronts and the changes that take place every year. Lou Lou Boutique, Scotch & Soda and Nordstrom Rack are the newest retailers to hit the row of stores, extending the range of shops Newbury Street has to offer.
For shopper Adam Riancho, a second year film major at Emerson College, the changes to Newbury Street provide him with a wider selection of shops.
“[Newbury Street] has a lot to offer now,” Riancho said. “From thrift stores selling vintage stuff like The Closet to department stores selling affordable luxury stuff like The Rack, you can find great deals in a lot of the shops here.”
Lou Lou Boutique opened its doors on Newbury Street less than a year ago. While recognized for possessing an assortment of accessories for women, the items Lou Lou offers cater to a wide range of consumers. Lou Lou serves as an accessory one-stop shop, carrying an array of items such as oversized statement pieces for the fall and subtle accessories.
“The spirit of our store is something for everyone – all ages, styles, budgets, that kind of thing,” Lou Lou Boutique manager Sarah Scofield said.
With an eye for what is most current in the fashion market, Scofield is confident that Lou Lou will always have something to offer that is up-to-date with recent seasonal trends.
“We have winter wear when it’s cold, sun hats in the summertime,” Scofield said. “Green is our big color for the fall.”
Despite their wide-range of options, shopper Kirsten Whalen, a Boston-based speech therapist, believes Lou Lou’s prices are not for the thrifty and tight-pocketed.
“Sometimes [Lou Lou’s selection] is a little more expensive than what I’m willing to spend, but I really like the stuff that’s in there, so I’m always torn,” Whalen said.
Scotch & Soda, an Amsterdam-based fashion brand, marked their its entry into the market on Newbury Street just six weeks ago and replaced the much-loved ice cream shop J.P. Licks.
Unlike Lou Lou Boutique, the apparel at Scotch & Soda is not marketed to a specific clientele, as they offer an assortment of contemporary clothing pieces for men, women and children.
“With [Scotch & Soda], we don’t have a demographic. We don’t gear or market toward any particular age or anything,” said Scotch & Soda manager Bryan Donnell. “We’ve seen college students, of course, but we’ve also seen the mature woman come in and pull together a look that’s sophisticated and young.”
Donnell, who has worked at the store since its opening on Newbury Street, said he has seen clients return to the store, alongside interested customers who had never heard of the brand before.
“This location’s been good to us,” Donnell said.
Fetaine Seddighzadeh, a server at Trident Booksellers & Café, a few doors down from Scotch & Soda is located, found the store’s assortment of urban-inspired pieces charming.
Seddighzadeh, a regular customer of shops like Madewell and Second Time Around on Newbury Street, said she believes the selection of clothes and accessories offered by the brand is “very upscale, very hip, very chic, but at the same time casual.”
“It fits the whole Boston culture,” she said.
Alongside Lou Lou Boutique and Scotch & Soda, there is Nordstrom Rack. Before their grand opening on Newbury Street in March, The Rack had been much anticipated in joining neighbors Victoria’s Secret and H&M.
Nordstrom Rack, the off-price division of the upscale Nordstrom chain, offers a varied selection of clothing, shoes and accessories from high-end brand names at discounted prices. At The Rack, shoppers find brand names like Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren and DKNY.
Nordstrom Rack is a fun, fast and easy-to-shop destination where style meets savings, according to the store’s website.
“There are a lot of options [at Nordstrom Rack]. Affordable too,” Seddighzadeh said. “It’s great. Kind of like make-your-own style, anyone can shop there.”
Katie Lilly, a stay-at-home mom from Norwell, credits her visit to The Rack to the extensive collection of designer denim and popular brands available there.
“There are way too many choices,” she said. “High-end brands for less like Splendid, Paige, Hudson and Vince.”
Lilly, who takes occasional trips down to Newbury Street for the retail experience, was thrilled to hear about the range of discount deals being offered at The Rack.
“I think it’s awesome. I think you could find the same things here that you could find in a regular Nordstrom store for so much less,” she said.
