The Northeastern University (NU) field hockey team is still winless within the Colonial Athletic Conference after falling to James Madison University (JMU) and the College of William & Mary over Columbus Day weekend.

Sophomore forward June Curry-Lindahl recorded her first multi-goal game of the season against JMU on Friday, Oct. 7, scoring NU’s only goals as they lost to the Dukes 3-2. Both shots came in the first half of the game, tying the game 2-2 going into the half. JMU went ahead early in the second half to win by a single goal.

“They were two great goals. She was really poised,” head coach Cheryl Murtagh said of Curry-Lindahl’s performance. “I’m really proud of her and the improvements she’s made this year in her play.”

Murtagh decided to pull senior goalkeeper Becky Garner from the game with just under four minutes remaining to add an extra attacker to the field.

“We’ve tied games and won games doing that,” Murtagh said. “It is a strategy that we use.”

However, it proved unsuccessful on Friday.

The Huskies struggled again on Sunday when they faced William & Mary through the rain.

The Tribe scored a minute and a half into the game before adding another goal and then a third unanswered point in the second half.

NU scored on a penalty corner as the game clock showed one hour of play. Freshman midfielder Axelle Dewamme moved the ball to senior midfielder Natalie Stewart, who passed it to senior defender Jessica Unger. Unger then scored her fourth goal of the season.

The Tribe held off the Huskies for the rest of the meeting to best them 3-1.

“We really need to step it up,” Murtagh said. “We need to start to put it together and finish the season the way we started out.”

The Huskies will be back on the road this weekend, looking to get their first conference win of the season against Hofstra University on Friday, Oct. 14 before meeting the University of Massachusetts-Amherst on Sunday, Oct. 16.
