Despite failing to qualify for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Indoor Championships, the men’s and women’s track teams made strong finishes at their respective meets, with the men’s second place finishing at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Championships.
“Their performance ended with the highest point total and team finish in the history of the program, scoring in the shot put, high jump, heptathlon, 60 [meter] hurdles, winning the 1,000, the distance medley relay and the 60,” said head coach Cathrine Erickson.
This meet resulted in many singular achievements. Sophomore Chris Jewett, senior David Johnson and freshmen Austin Lin and David Adams broke the school record with a time of 3 minutes, 12.38 seconds. Following this record-breaking performance, freshman Naukym Morton smashed the school record in the 60 with a time of 6.73 seconds. Marc Rienas shaved two seconds off of his 1,000 time by clocking in at 2:24.15 and senior superstar Paul Duffey axed time off of his 1,000 with a final time of 2:22.57.
The overall performance for the men’s team gives the Husky community much to be proud of, with the indoor portion of their season bringing them confidence as they move onto outdoor competitions.
For the women’s team at ECAC championships, junior Jessica Scott stole the show with a fifth place finish in the 60 dash. Her time was a blistering 7.63 seconds. Coming off of Scott’s success, the team left second place competitor University of Rhode Island in the dust with a 92 point gap.
By completing IC4A and ECAC Championships, the Huskies officially ended the indoor portion of the season. Moving into outdoor season, next week’s journey to the Victor Lopez Invite in Houston, Texas, will set the stage for what to expect moving forward.
“I am extremely proud of how hard the athletes and the coaches have worked over the last couple of years as we have built such a balanced team where each event area can contribute at the New England and IC4A/ECAC Championship level and it truly showed this indoor season,” Erickson said.
