The 32 editors and managers making up The Huntington News’ fall 2025 editorial board officially transitioned into their roles April 11, with Emily Spatz selected to serve as the publication’s new editor-in-chief.
Spatz, a rising fourth-year majoring in journalism and political science, was selected to serve atop the masthead along with managing editors Alexis Algazy and Annika Sunkara. Former managing editor Ananya Kulkarni has shifted to the role of editor-at-large.
The four members of senior staff take the helm of the publication after a year of significant growth for The News, but also at a time of great uncertainty for the Northeastern University community.
“Our work has never been more important,” said Spatz, a former projects and campus editor. “I’m honored to serve as the next editor-in-chief of The Huntington News. As we continue to expand our reach and uphold the highest standards of journalism, I’m excited to help guide The News through an unprecedented time.”
More people are reading and contributing to The News than at any point since the COVID-19 pandemic, and its presence on campus has continued to grow due to the publication’s multimedia and social media content along with award-winning coverage of the university.
With more than 60 staff members and 30 editors, The News published over 930 stories between April 2024 and April 2025. Reporting on the impacts of the Trump presidency, on-campus demonstrations and university administration has helped The News grow its readership across platforms.
During the past year, The News also re-established its opinion Editorial Board and its Business Team — tasked with securing long-term sustainability for the publication, including the paper’s upcoming 100-year anniversary.
The News’ editors, deputy editors and managers also officially filled their posts across the publication’s 14 sections. Per The News’ Constitution, editors-in-chief can choose to serve for either a semester or for the entire year, while all other positions are re-selected every semester.
In February, the newsroom passed an amendment to change the election process for its senior leadership and editors. With the new amendment, members of The News’ Board of Directors have a direct say in who leads the paper, and outgoing editors and new leadership determine the rest of the masthead.
The new senior leadership, coming from sections across the newsroom, credited members of The News’ staff, editorial board, and outgoing senior staff — most of whom took their positions in April 2024 — for bringing The News to its current strong position. Those outgoing senior editors include editor-in-chief Sonel Cutler, managing editors Val O’Neill and Kulkarni, and editor-at-large Kate Armanini.

“The News is in wonderful hands and continues to produce exemplary journalism,” said Cutler, who will join The Chronicle of Higher Education as a reporting fellow after graduating. “I am so grateful for the community we’ve built in our newsroom and proud of all the ways we’ve impacted our community outside of it. There’s no doubt that our new leadership, editorial board and staff will continue our mission of uplifting the voices of the Northeastern community, holding our university accountable and training the next generation of journalists.”
“Thank you to our outgoing senior staff for paving the path, and alongside our new senior staff, I’m proud to carry on a legacy of student journalism at Northeastern,” said Sunkara, a rising fourth-year journalism student from Texas. “I consider it a privilege to help lead a paper that has given me so much. I look forward to supporting our editorial board and growing our staff, whose unwavering dedication is a service to the entire university community.”
“Independent student journalism has never been more vital to democracy,” said Algazy, a rising fourth-year political science and journalism student from New Jersey. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow The News and pursue the truth unequivocally during such a pivotal moment in time. This newspaper wouldn’t be where we are today without our outgoing leadership, and in this role, I will work to continue building upon the foundation they left for us.”
Spatz selected Kulkarni — who has served as managing editor for the past year and a half — as her editor-at-large. The editor-at-large is appointed by the editor-in-chief to help manage the paper and make editorial decisions.
“I’m grateful to serve as the next editor-at-large of The Huntington News,” said Kulkarni, a rising fifth-year journalism and political science student from Pennsylvania. “I look forward to continuing to support our talented staff as they work to uplift the voices of Northeastern students. At an important moment in our institution’s history, I am proud to contribute to The News’ longstanding mission of serving as the paper of record for the Northeastern community.”
