Athletes dream of being able to compete in the Olympics. Julia Marty has been there. Twice. In 2006 and 2010, Marty played for Switzerland’s women’s hockey team at the Winter Olympics.

Column: Still not sold

October 28, 2010
I'll admit it: I overreacted. When Northeastern's men's hockey team started this year with an 0-2-1 record, it was hard not to panic – the last time the team started a season with a record like that was 2005-06, an infamous, lost year when the team dropped eight times as many games as it won. Commonly referred to as "the three-win season," it's a time in the program's history most would rather forget.

What’s in (and not in) Muscle Milk

October 21, 2010
Once a staple of athletes’ training diet all over the country, Muscle Milk, a protein shake designed to increase strength and lean muscle growth, was simply too good to be true. According to Mary Wilfert, the associate director of health and safety of the NCAA, Muscle Milk wasn’t banned, but an ingredient in it, an insulin growth hormone (IGF-1) that stimulates muscle growth, was on the list of banned substances.

Men’s Soccer: Freshmen control the scoring

October 21, 2010
Since Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play began for the men’s soccer team Sept. 25, goals have been difficult to come by. The Huskies are ranked seventh out of 12 in the CAA in average goals per game with 1.33. Despite a plethora of scoring chances, the Huskies have been unable to execute, posting one goal in two contests this week– a 0-0 draw last Saturday against UNC–Wilmington and a 2-1 loss last night at Towson.

Men’s Hockey: Woes continue for Cronin’s crew

October 21, 2010
The men’s hockey team sent 13 men to the penalty box, collected 48 penalty minutes and had two players earn game misconducts, yet still battled to a 2-2 tie against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Saturday night. “Anytime you have two five-minute majors and three 5-on-3s against and you don’t lose the game, you’re lucky,” head coach Greg Cronin said. “We can’t play hockey like that and expect to win. It just destroys the game.”

Women’s Hockey: Huskies take two from Colonials

October 21, 2010
The women’s hockey team had a successful weekend, winning both its games against Robert Morris University (RMU), the first 6-4 and the second, 4-3. “We took advantage of their mistakes and seized the opportunities they gave us” head coach Dave Flint said.

Women’s Soccer: Huskies drop two straight, fall to seventh

October 21, 2010
With just three games left in the regular season, head coach Tracey Leone and the women’s soccer team are hoping for a breakthrough game this weekend after a tough road trip. “We’ve got to end strong and with great competitive spirit and continue to do the best that we can,” Leone said. “That’s our responsibility and that’s what we’d like to do.”

Swimming & Diving: Smotrycz strong in season opener, aids win

October 21, 2010
The swimming & diving team started its season with a victory, sinking the University of Vermont (UVM) 165-124 last Saturday. The Huskies took control of the meet early, winning eight of the first nine events. “The team’s performance, especially early on, was very exciting, and is very promising,” senior swimmer Erica Smotrycz said. “It was our first home meet and we were able to start strong. To start the season off like this is definitely uplifting, especially with our high hopes.”

Field Hockey: Graham caps comeback

October 21, 2010
The field hockey team took down No. 20 Stanford 2-1 in an overtime thriller Monday, bringing the Huskies overall record to 7-9 and 2-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), and up to fifth place. Sophomore forward Nicky Graham scored two minutes into the extra session off an assist from junior forward Carolyn Malloy, helping the Huskies come back from a 1-0 deficit.

Volleyball: Huskies eye playoff berth

October 21, 2010
The volleyball team split its trip to the South this weekend in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. The Huskies beat the University of North Carolina, Wilmington (UNCW) 3-0 Friday, however they dropped a crucial match Saturday in Atlanta, against Georgia State University (GSU).

Player of the Week: Julia Alvarez

October 21, 2010
Julia Alvarez did not expect to win her first two individual swimming races in college, she said. The freshman from San Anselmo, Calif., said she was “surprised and excited” to win both the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke in Northeastern’s first swim meet of the year against the University of Vermont this past Saturday at Barletta Natatorium.

Column: Puck fans, be easy

October 21, 2010
A few weeks into the college hockey season, our beloved men’s team has already hit some bumps in the road. Most importantly, the 0-2-1 Huskies have yet to win a game, among some other concerning setbacks. Before I go deeper into some of the problems the Huskies are having, I want to tell you, the fan, the student, or the alumnus, to relax. This is the longest season the NCAA has to offer, and while some might be frustrated, I’ve seen some very positive signs of life from this team. So for each negative point that I will make about the team, I will have another positive one to counter it.
