Madigan picks asst. coaches

August 18, 2011
Former Brown University assistant coach Jerry Keefe and former Harvard University assistant coach Patrick Foley will serve as assistants to the men’s hockey team, new head coach Jim Madigan announced Wednesday. Keefe and Foley will round out an entirely new coaching staff that hopes to improve on last year’s 14-16-8 record under head coach Greg Cronin and assistants Sebastien Laplante and Albie O’Connell.

Updated spaces ready for fall

After most students departed campus for the summer, construction crews entered to renovate several university buildings, providing classroom space and technological upgrades. Some of the larger renovation projects took place in Richards Hall and Blackman Auditorium, Lucy Warsh, a university spokesperson, said in an email to The News. Warsh said all work is expected to be completed by the start of fall semester, providing no obstacle for students.

University plans to expand to North Carolina

Approval for a Northeastern University satellite campus in Charlotte, N.C. is expected to come this fall. The university hopes to offer a doctorate in education and eight master’s-level programs at the campus starting next year.

Officials in the Bouvé College School of Nursing plan to expand the school’s bachelor’s and master’s programs nationwide next year through online offerings as part of a partnership with Orbis Education. The partnership intends to target what an Orbis press release called a “nursing shortage.”

Farmers market takes root on campus

After three years of hard work and false starts, Northeastern Farmers Market organizers finally got a chance to enjoy the fruits of their labor Wednesday with a small, six-hour produce exhibition on Centennial Commons. Student Government Association (SGA) Senator Dylan O’Sullivan, who most recently spearheaded the farmers market initiative, said he was very pleased with the event. He said one vendor, Heavens Harvest Farm of New Braintree participated, bringing about three tables and a couple small tents.

Univ. gives town extension to study land sale

Northeastern University officials granted the Town of Ashland a two-week extension to continue environmental testing at the Warren Woods property last week. The land, currently owned by the university, is on track to be sold to the town for just over $5 million. The extension comes after the town’s Board of Selectmen threatened to back out of the deal unless they had more time to study the land.
