Dorm plan moving ahead

Northeastern has already cleared several roadblocks in solidifying plans for demolition of the back of the Greater Boston YMCA on Huntington Avenue and construction of the new 17-story, 720-bed dormitory that will be built in its place. While still anticipating several more bumps on the road, Vice President of City Affairs John Tobin says everything is on track for an August 2013 opening.

Professor uses Twitter to start book club

BREAKING: Ed Klotzbier, Vice President for Student Affairs, resigns

Vice President for Student Affairs Ed Klotzbier has resigned from his position, according to an announcement sent to members of Northeastern faculty and staff yesterday afternoon. Klotzbier served in his role as vice president for student affairs for eight years and director of university communications for two years prior.

Huskies run to support vets

Seven Northeastern students joined more than 2,000 runners at Fenway Park early Sunday morning to cross home plate and score a major run for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The second annual Run to Home Base 9K raised an estimated $2.6 million for prominent organizations offering support to veterans and family members as well as community education about the “invisible wounds of war” and research to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD.)

SGA looking for ‘NUideas’

This week, the Student Government Association (SGA) launched a new online program to promote student input and feedback on initiatives around campus. The program, called NUideas, allows students to make and comment on suggestions online for ways to improve student life.

Aoun joins Tecogen board Waltham-based company Tecogen, Inc. announced May 12 that Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun joined the company’s board of directors. Tecogen is “a leading manufacturer of Combined Heat and Power products including natural gas engine-driven cogeneration and air conditioning systems for industrial and commercial use,” according to the company’s website.

Northeastern’s 109th commencement ceremony was as much a celebration of community as it was of the more than 2,900 graduating members of the class of 2011. University President Joseph Aoun, honorary degree recipients and other speakers urged the graduates to take risks and enjoy life during the May 6 ceremony at TD Garden.

‘Y’ not a landmark, says city

The Boston Landmarks Commission (BLC) met Tuesday and unanimously voted to deny upgrading the significance of the Huntington Avenue YMCA building and making it a historical landmark. By denying the building landmark status, the BLC cleared the way to build a proposed residence hall, that would open in August 2013.

City asks for increased aid

Northeastern administrators, along with officials from other major Boston non-profit organizations, are in discussions with the city’s government about a possible increase in the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) program.
