BPD steps up efforts to curb loud college parties

Boston law enforcement officials are heightening efforts to curb alcohol- and noise-related offenses as the new school year begins, officials said. The Boston Police Department (BPD) and Northeastern University Division of Public Safety (NUPD) have historically ramped up enforcement of alcohol laws at the start of the fall semester to limit underage drinking, disorderly conduct and open container violations.

City officials inspect students’ housing during move-in

As Boston’s 250,000 college students descend on the city after their summer breaks, things can get a little hectic. City officials have been working hard to simplify the early-September influx in popular student areas such as Gardner, Ashford and Pratt streets, the Fenway and Mission Hill. Officers of the Inspectional Services Department travelled door-to-door last weekend to offer preliminary inspections of students’ new apartments. The most common problems included faulty smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, pests, rodents, broken railings and mold, officials said.

New campaign for driver, pedestrian safety at busy intersections

Ranked 19th on a list of North America’s 26 most congested cities, Boston may not be known for its efficient traffic flow. A report entitled the Congestion Index, released in July by the GPS manufacturer TomTom, showed Boston commuters face an average delay of 19 minutes each hour during peak driving periods.

Students get hands dirty for environment

Students in Environmental Politics gained real out-of-the-classroom experience this semester as they performed eco-friendly acts of their own picking. Projects included modifying the recycling system in students’ apartment buildings, starting an Earth Day program at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum and working to build a lesson plan for preschoolers and kindergarteners about recycling.

MBTA service cuts, fare increases approved

Activists are protesting service cuts and fare hikes after the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Board of Directors approved a 23 percent fare increase and a set of service reductions in a 4-1 vote on April 4 as a part of the MBTA’s third proposal to address its $185 million budget deficit for Fiscal Year 2013, released March 28. The changes will go into effect July 1.

Chain Reaction offers cheap bike repairs

With temperatures bubbling up to 80 degrees this week, it’s time to brush off old, rusty bikes and put them to good use. Boston’s only after school, mobile, youth-run bike shop, Chain Reaction, opened March 14 at Yawkey Club of Roxbury to provide bicycles, bicycle repairs and free bike mechanic lessons.

Espresso Royale Caffe closed for shift to Pavement Coffeehouse

Espresso Royale Caffe (ERC) closed for renovations Monday as it transitions to become a Pavement Coffeehouse. The Gainsborough Street shop, under the same ownership as Pavement Coffeehouse on Boylston Street, will re-open March 26, said Andrew Lopilato, director of operations for the shops.
