10 things nursing school doesn’t teach you

Nursing school teaches you skills, technique and medical knowledge through the buffer of a lab, a PowerPoint presentation or a mannequin, while work will teach you how to care and infuse technique with empathy, mastery with kindness, competency with advocacy.

Review: “Clouds of Sils Maria” addresses aging

April 8, 2015
It’s not hard to see why filmmakers are so fascinated with the aging actress. To these women, youth is coveted both for personal and professional reasons; much more than it does for individuals in less visual careers, the struggle to stay young and beautiful holds special urgency for actresses.

Finding yourself through solitude

Finding yourself through solitude

April 8, 2015
I am sitting in the shade of a beech tree, surrounded by its tiny white flowers, resting on palms dirtied by the damp ground and gazing at the distant top of the Prudential Center. A little girl in a pink dress and velcro sneakers runs, laughing, ahead of her parents while an old woman tightly grips the ends of three leashes, each restraining a yapping bichon frise. The sun drops lower and lower in the sky, and the population of the park continues to shift. Now, a group of teenagers eats ice cream on the grass. Now, a tourist snaps photos of the swan boats. Now, two pigeons fight over a pizza crust. I sit and watch it all unfold. I haven’t spoken with anyone in hours and, yet, I’ve never felt more connected to the world around me.

Nave Gallery Annex creates artistic opportunity

April 1, 2015
At first glance, the Nave Gallery Annex is just an old house behind the famous Redbones BBQ in Davis Square. The main door opens into a small corridor lined with business cards and flyers and, as the floorboards creak with each step, one may start to wonder if they are in the right place for an art show.
