The Huskies cruised to a 64-46 victory over the Tribe Sunday afternoon, leading for all but 14 seconds of the game and improving to 4-3 in conference play and 9-9 overall.
Friday night’s loss in Amherst broke the Huskies’ nine-game undefeated streak, but the setback was not enough to shake NU from first place in Hockey East, where the team remains one point ahead of cross-city foes Boston College.
The Huskies grabbed the lead just 34 seconds into the game with a goal by second-year defenseman Codie Cross, who earned her 25th career point with the goal. NU’s quick goal jump-started a dominant first period.
The Huskies stayed even with the Dragons early on — the teams were deadlocked at 10 after trading baskets and playing at a slow pace in the first quarter. With a recorded attendance of 816, the Huskies had their second biggest crowd of the season thus far.
“They gave us a fight all night long,” Coen said. “I thought [Gresham’s] shooting and Pusica’s shooting at the end of the game really gave us a separation, along with Bolden Brace, who really played well for us in the second half, both defensively, rebound wise and moving the ball.”
The Northeastern women’s hockey team welcomed their cross-city rivals from Boston University to Matthews Arena Tuesday night for the 81st all-time meeting between the teams. The 3-3 draw was the teams’ first faceoff in 2018; the Huskies took the previous two contests earlier in the season by scores of 3-2 (OT) and 6-3.
The Huskies were aggressive on both sides from the tip, pressuring the Charleston guards on defense and attacking the basket on offense. The Huskies forced six turnovers in the first quarter and converted those fastbreak opportunities into eight of their 13 first-quarter points.
The Northeastern women’s swimming and diving team raced to a decisive 182-118 dual meet win against the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, Saturday. The meet against Vermont was the first competition for the Huskies since Dec. 2.
“Every team’s a good team in this league, and to get four points and two wins was a big weekend for us,” head coach Jim Madigan said. “The club that we played is a hard-nosed, tough team to play and you have to earn your victory with them.”
Konya, who will begin his tenure as NU’s athletic director Feb. 1, has worked in university athletic departments from Michigan to South Dakota, California and Texas.
Some might see his frequent career movements as a red flag, but Konya is confident that his past experiences are among his biggest strengths.
The Northeastern University women’s hockey team started the new year with a dominant 4-2 win against the University of Connecticut (UConn) Tuesday night at Matthews Arena. It was the first meeting between the teams in nearly a year. Northeastern won the previous eight matchups.
