The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team is a team Northeastern should beat easily. However, after the first period of Friday night’s Husky vs. Husky match up at Matthews Arena, that wasn’t the case — the scoreboard was blank on both sides. Although NU out shot UConn 18-5 in the first period, they were unable to put the biscuit in the basket. That is until senior captain Jason Guerriero stepped up 32 seconds into the second period with his first of two goals on the game.
For his efforts he has been named The Northeastern News Player of the Week.
“We didn’t want to give them a sniff,” Guerriero said. “We came out in the second and opened the flood gates on them.”
The red and black Huskies didn’t turn back after Guerriero’s first goal as they notched three more scores in the period.
In the third, Guerriero scored his 14th career power play goal. He is the active leader on the Huskies for power play goals.
“We try to go into every game as if it’s against a No. 1 ranked team,” Guerriero said. “It was our last non-Hockey East game and we wanted to enter our conference schedule playing good hockey.”
NU ended up with a 5-2 victory, as they head into Friday night’s HE opener against the University of Maine at Matthews Arena.
Guerriero is tied with junior Matt Morris for the team lead in goals with four and his nine points are second behind Morris’ 10.
Last season, Guerriero was named the team’s co-MVP, along with goalie Keni Gibson, after leading the team in points, with 35 and goals with 16. In 114 career games played, Guerriero has 36 goals, 72 assists and 108 points.
