Despite a sweep of the University of New Hampshire Wildcats on Friday, the Northeastern volleyball team was unable to put away the third-ranked University of Maine Black Bears Saturday at Cabot Gym.
The Huskies record now stands at 18-10 overall and 9-3 in the America East Conference.
The Huskies swept the Wildcats to give NU coach Ken Nichols his 100th win. They rolled through the first two games (30-21, 30-26) behind junior Larissa Adomat’s 14 kills and freshman Bree Peterson’s 46 assists.
The Wildcats attempted a comeback in the third game, tying the game at 29.
There were 10 lead changes before the Huskies put down UNH 36-34. Freshman Brittany Eukovich hit .857 with six kills in the third game and junior Brandie Genibrel stepped in to hit .400.
“Our offense sputtered [in the third game], we just got tentative and waited for them to make a mistake instead of attacking,” Nichols said.
On Saturday, Maine spoiled Senior Recognition Night, upsetting the Huskies, 3-1. Seniors Karrin Moore, Ashley Adamczyk, Whitney Weinkoop and Shannon Brooker were honored before the start of the game. Northeastern held early leads in both games one and two but were unable to hold on to either, dropping the games 30-25 and 30-28.
In game three, Genibrel and sophomore Ashley Reeves came in off the bench to combine for eight kills, six digs and three blocks to help beat Maine 33-31. However, their offense continued to struggle and they lost game four, 30-25. Despite the loss, Adamczyk posted a new school record with 39 digs.
“We sat back instead of fighting. A lot of it was mental; we weren’t focused on the game. It will be an advantage to play on the road for the [America East] Conference,” Reeves said.
The Huskies hit the road again this weekend to face conference rivals University of Maryland-Baltimore County and Stony Brook University.
