The Northeastern swimming and diving team pushed its overall record to 2-0 Saturday, beating Central Connecticut State University 164-128 and Division 2 Southern Connecticut State University 221-78 at the Barletta Natatorium.
The Huskies were able to win the meet despite only winning five events, due to a total team effort. Of the day’s 16 events, 14 races saw Northeastern swimmers place in the top three and 13 times Northeastern placed two swimmers inside the top three.
Senior co-captain Katie Schmaling provided the team with three strong performances, finishing second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.43), second in the 50-yard freestyle (25.48) and third in the 100-yard freestyle (55.42). She was also a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay team.
In what proved to be the best race of the day, the 200-yard medley relay team of Schmaling, fellow senior co-captain Emily Rochefort, junior Sarah Reddick and freshman Coryn Voels, squeaked out a win by seven one hundredths of a second against hard fighting CCSU, pulling even when Reddick hit the water for the butterfly leg of the race. The Huskies took the lead for good on a strong final lap by Voels. The winning time was 1:49.93.
Reddick won the 100-yard butterfly (58.00) for the Huskies in convincing fashion, beating out CCSU’s Rachel Brookman by 1.92 seconds.
Rochefort recorded eight points for the Huskies, finishing second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.88) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.06).
