To the editor,
Recently I received a letter under my door in Willis Hall from Vice President Ed Klotzbier about the Super Bowl security procedures. This letter informs me that I should “avoid gathering in large crowds outdoors after the game.”
While I understand where VP Klotzbier is going with this, he does not make clear the conduct that he wishes to prohibit. An underlying concept in criminal law is that an individual shouldn’t have to guess as what’s prohibited, but instead it should be clear what activities are and are not allowed. People should be reasonably informed as to what’s expected.
Let’s skip the verbiage. Instead of talking in legalese, let’s be honest about what we all know. Causing harm to others or others’ property isn’t OK. Vandalism isn’t OK. Threatening a police officer isn’t OK.
We all know how to behave; we also hope this weekend will play out peacefully.
Sincerely, Aaron Mischler 50 Leon St #3240 101 Willis Hall Boston, MA 02115 [email protected] NU Law ’07 740.334.3812
