You may have tapped the wallet, reserved your table and ordered the flowers, but when it comes to this year’s Valentine’s Day, have you thought of sitting down and making that perfect playlist for your special someone?
Haneen Arafat, SIRIUS Satellite Radio’s Love channel programmer, said when it comes to good love songs, honesty and sincerity are key and “sex appeal goes a long way.”
Among her favorite current love song writers, Arafat cited Babyface, who she quoted saying “There are a million ways to write a love song, you just got to find the right order for the words.”
Many recognizable campus figures have their own top choices for this years Valentine’s celebration.
Along the same lines of Babyface, other R’B songs graced the lists of many.
Ed Klotzbier, vice president for student affairs, included Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” on his list of top love song choices and Justin King, programming director of WRRB, might just be spinning one of his picks, “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green, this Monday.
But if sultry is what you’re looking for, some people prefer the sexy sounds of jazz or Motown to make their darlings swoon.
Student Government Association (SGA) Vice President for Financial Affairs Ali Barlow singled out Ella Fitzgerald’s “Love is Here to Stay” as her top track this Valentine’s, while Nicole Martino, SGA vice president for student services, would rather boogey down to “In the Still of the Night,” orginally by the Five Satins.
Arafat stresses knowing your audience when compiling your love mix. Though R’B, jazz and Motown may be great for some, they may not strike the right chord with everyone.
“Every genre is just full of love songs,” she said.
Although he said he spends most Valentine’s Days listening to J. Geils Band’s “Love Stinks,” SGA President Bill Durkin said this year he might pop in Led Zeppelin’s “All My Love” for his special someone.
“It’s got a lot of synth,” Durkin said. “I’m a big fan of synth.”
