This is in response to Meghan Colloton’s All Hail “Pokers Must Fold” (March 16). I’m definitely not a “Promiscuous Poker” but come on Meg, does a poke really bother you that badly? I’m not going to lie, I get a little excited when I sign on to The Facebook and discover I have received a poke from a particular female. The funny thing is you yourself have probably received a thousand reactionary pokes since last Wednesday.
Poking is not my main issue with your article though; you don’t like it and that’s your opinion. However, it was the “So now poking could be the beginning of some psycho stalker relationship?” comment that got me. Are you too good to meet a guy on The Facebook or the Internet? I have no idea, I don’t know you, but no girl is too good for that. I’m on a plane right now, just read your article and can’t wait to check out your profile and poke you. If you have the aptitude to understand this poke you will realize it is an “I don’t like your vibe” poke.
Every poke has a meaning, just look for it. The random person of the opposite sex poke means, “Hey, I like your profile and think you’re hot, but am not going to waste my time writing a generic message unless you’re interested.” This is what you will think my poke means until you read this. The poke from your friend is a “How’s it going, I was just looking you up and wanted to say ‘hi.'”
This guy that poked your friend is probably a good guy. She can check him out, see his major, interests and all that stuff. Then she decides if she wants to poke him back if she is interested. He is definitely a college student; she doesn’t have to worry about him being a 45-year-old creep trying to talk to 19-year-old girls (unless he was creepy enough to steal an NU e-mail).
Girls, and especially Meg, have to realize that 90 percent of guys are not the “go up to a girl at a bar or party with a ‘Hey how you doin’ t’night baby'” type. So think about it, of those 10 percent of guys that drop sleazy lines, how many of them are scumbags?
