In the finale of a season most Husky fans would like to forget, the Northeastern football team trampled the University of Rhode Island Rams 42-14 for their fifth win of the season. The win leaves the Huskies with a finale record of 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the Atlantic-10.
Heading into the half Northeastern was clinging to a 14-7 lead but took control in the first minute of the second half. Marc Thomas started things off for the Huskies by returning the opening kickoff 93-yards for the score. Thomas wasn’t done, however, as he forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff that was recovered by Northeastern. With just one play the Huskies scored their second TD in a minute on a James West 35-yard TD run. The freshman West had a career day with 115 yards rushing, 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
“It’s a compliment to the whole scheme,” West said. “I couldn’t have done it without the downfield blocking.”
Senior quarterback Shawn Brady completed 12-of-23 pass attempts for 199 yards and two scores before being replaced by senior backup Sean Cassidy. Overall the Huskies threw for 214 yards and rushed for 266 yards.
Senior safety Gavin Potter finished his career with a great performance, recovering a fumble and grabbing an interception. Both turnovers led to NU scores.
After sitting out the first quarter as part of his suspension stemming from an altercation with junior kicker Miro Kesic, senior linebacker Liam Ezekiel, the All-time leading tackler in Div. I-AA history, notched eight total tackles, including three solo.
Ezekiel was also named to the A-10 All-conference team for the fourth straight year.
While the season may have finally come to an end, head coach Rocky Hager has his work cut out for him in the next few months with recruiting and working on improving the team’s returning players.
