It’s been quite a while since the Northeastern field hockey team has seen anything other than a zero next to their opponent’s name on the scoreboard. The Huskies have won seven straight games, with their last five being shutout wins. The first two games of the streak yielded a measly goal apiece for the NU opponents.
Senior goalie Diana Nelson hasn’t allowed a goal in two weeks and has been named the Northeastern News Player of the Week.
Nelson, who leads the America East in goals against average allowing just .91 per game, made nine saves against the University of Connecticut Huskies last week helping Northeastern to a 1-0 overtime win against the No. 6 ranked team in the nation. In 15 games this season Nelson has allowed only 13 goals. She has eight shutouts and has allowed just one goal five times this season.
With a streak of shutouts like this the pressure can really mount on a goalie.
“It’s in the back of my mind,” Nelson said. “I just take each game as they come.”
Taking nothing away from her stellar performance, Nelson has one of the top defenses in the nation in front of her. She has only had to make 48 saves this year, last in the conference.
“Every game is 100 percent. Everyone plays with heart,” Nelson said. “I have a really good team in front of me.”
Like her other senior teammates, Nelson wants to pull the AE sweep and win the conference title for a fourth straight year.
“As seniors we want to go out on top,” said the Old Bridge, New Jersey native. “We want to bring the championship home.”
In her career Nelson has played 2859:61 minutes and has an overall record of 30-8. She has a career goals against average of 1.105 and 18 shutouts.
Nelson will try to continue her streak when the Huskies visit Boston University Sunday at 1 p.m.
