It was a battle of unbeatens Friday night at the Barletta Natatorium, as the Northeastern Swimming and Diving Team maintained their perfect season by beating previously undefeated Wagner College, 114-91. The Seahawks provided Northeastern with its closest match of the season.
Coryn Voels continued a great freshman season by winning two races. Voels dominated the 1000-yard freestyle (10:40.35), winning by 12 seconds. After eight races, the meet was tied at 75. In the biggest race of the season, Voels stepped up and scored a huge win for the Huskies by cruising to a victory in the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.06).
Junior Emily Crookall-Nixon won the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.04) and was a member of the winning 400-yard medley relay team along with Emily Rochefort and sophomores Katy Turner and Samantha Hoffmann. Crookall-Nixon also finished third in a close and exciting 200-yard freestyle (2:01.16).
Senior co-captain Kristen Kane won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.78), beating out fellow captain Rochefort (2:32.78). In the closest race of the day, senior Katie Schmaling won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.68) by four one-hundredths of a second over Wagner’s Jess Radke. Schmaling later was a member of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team along with freshman Emily Ferrier, Voels and junior Sarah Reddick.
Reddick had a good day for the Huskies, winning the 100-yard freestyle (54.67) and later securing a win for the Huskies by swimming the final lap of the 200-yard freestyle.
The Swimming and Diving Team heads off to the Dominican Republic from Dec. 28 to Jan. 4 for a training meet. The Huskies’ season will resume on Saturday, Jan. 8, at Harvard University at 9 a.m.
