Northeastern wide receiver Cory Parks has been selected as The Northeastern News Player of the Week.
On just four catches, the junior gained 125 yards and two touchdowns, setting the tone for the team in a 71-0 win over Cheyney Saturday at Parsons Field.
Each of Parks’ receptions were crucial, including a big 26-yard reception to start off NU’s first drive.
Then, with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, quarterback Shawn Brady found Parks wide-open for a 45-yard touchdown extending the lead to 21.
“Everything’s going well right now and I’m really excited about our offense,” Parks said. “Cheyney was a good opener for us to see where we are and Navy will be a big challenge on Saturday.”
Parks and the Huskies face off against the Division 1 program Navy in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday in what is sure to be a challenging matchup for the program.
This was Parks’ fourth career 100-yard receiving game, while his 1,539 yards career receiving yards now put him at fifth on the all-time list. With 95 catches, he is ranked eighth on the all time Husky list.
“We were just connecting from the start,” Parks said of himself and Brady. “We’ve been doing it for three years and we definitely know where we are. We know each other real well and how I’ll run my routes.”
Parks was also found by backup quarterback Sean Cassidy for a 47-yard touchdown before the half ended.
Parks, a junior from Miami, FL (Norland High School), immediately became a force for the Huskies his freshman year. He led the team in catches (34), receiving yards (458) and receiving touchdowns (five).
Last year, he once again started all of the team’s games in raising his statistics and leading the team once again in catches (57), receiving yards (956) and receiving touchdowns (11).
Parks has been honored by the Atlantic 10 numerous times, he was a third team all-conference member last year. He was also honored as a preseason second-team all-conference member this year.
“With the things that happened in the off-season, this team has definitely risen to the challenge,” Parks said. “We’ve just seen that there’s no challenge we can’t face now. We just have to play with our hearts every time we’re out there.”
