CUP receives ideas for diversity chair upgrades In an effort to reach an agreement with the Council for University Programs (CUP), various cultural organizations and student groups outlined a proposal concerning CUP’s downsizing of its diversity chair position. Members of the Latin American Student Organization and Brothers About Change, among other groups, presented the coalition of student organizations’ ideas to CUP executive board members July 19. The proposal offered suggestions to upgrade the diversity chair position, which included an advisory council, semesterly meetings with other student groups, a minimum of four events geared toward diversity and a $28,333 budget. CUP’s executive board decided in the spring semester that the position did not need to be filled for the upcoming year as members said sponsoring diverse events is always on their minds. “We feel every event should be diverse,” said CUP President Amanda Zoglio. Another meeting between CUP and student groups has been planned for Aug. 1.
Homecoming chairs begin to fill, events rearranged Three Homecoming chairs have been filled, leaving five positions still available, said Tom Kneafsey the Homecoming committee chair. Laura Caputo will serve as the royalty chair, Hassan Harris will serve as the athletics liaison, and both Matt Reed and Jen Dowd will serve as the co-chairs for “Mayor of Huntington Avenue.” The chairs left to be filled are family weekend liaison, promotions director, parade chair, banner competition coordinator and administrative chair. Another change this year is that the Homecoming football game, scheduled for Oct. 15, has been moved from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., allowing the rearrangement of the morning activities. The Husky 3K run is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the carnival at 10:30 a.m. The parade is scheduled for noon and a tent party at Parson’s Field is scheduled for 1 p.m., before the game begins. “I’m really thankful that student affairs and athletics were able to get that done. It gives us some flexibility to play around with the rest of the day,” Kneafsey said.
CFO presents financial outlook to Task Force The university’s chief financial officer presented a campus financial model and explained Northeastern’s financial plans in terms of housing to the members of the Community Task Force yesterday. Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance Larry Mucciolo told members of the task force that “student housing remains the highest priority in the university’s capital construction program.” Members of the task force also examined an expanded housing and building option, which included more mixed-use structures in the center of campus. One of the structures was a 38-story tower near Forsyth Street. The options presented last night also included a 25-story building on Krentzman Quad and a 10-story building on Centennial Commons. The new options were presented to the task force after members requested to examine a plan that utilized more of the open space on campus. The next meeting is scheduled to be held Aug. 24 where members will discuss the university’s needs, goals and priorities.
