Laura Schuler, the former Husky (1989-1993) and Olympian, has been named the head coach of the Northeastern University women’s hockey team.
Schuler takes over the program after spending three seasons at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, where she saw the team rise from a club sport into a varsity program.
She began recruiting varsity-caliber players during the 2001-02 season and in 2003-04, the first season of varsity play for the team, Schuler led the team to a 13-12-1 record, including a 7-3 mark over the final 10 games of the season.
In recognition of her accomplishments, she earned ECAC East Coach of the Year honors.
A native of Scarborough, Ontario, Schuler spent 11 years on the Canadian National team. She won a silver medal with Canada during the first-ever Olympic competition for women’s hockey in 1998.
As a Husky, she was captain during her senior season, compiling 64 goals, 57 assists, and 121 points during her career. During the 1990-91 season, she led the team across the board in goals (20), assists (13) and points (33).
Bree Peterson, a freshman setter for the Northeastern volleyball team, was named the America East Volleyball Rookie of the Week.
In her first collegiate start last Wednesday, Peterson had 46 assists and a team-high 22 digs against 23rd-ranked Long Beach State.
She was a member of the Nike/Holiday Inn Sunset Classic All-Tournament team after posting 86 assists and 31 digs in the three matches she competed in.
Northeastern field hockey senior co-captain Liane Dixon has been named the America East Player of the Week.
Dixon has amassed five points in four games of competition for the field hockey team, including game-winning goals in NU’s 3-2 win over Ohio and 1-0 overtime victory against Penn State.
Northeastern senior football cornerback Jeremiah Mason suffered a season-ending knee injury in tackling drills during the pre-season, said coach Rocky Hager last week.
A third-team Atlantic 10 all-conference member last season, Mason started 10 games at left cornerback.
The Syracuse transfer posted 26 tackles last year (21 solo) and was named a second-team Atlantic 10 preseason all-conference member for this season.
“Losing an all-conference player is an obvious blow for the team,” junior wide receiver Cory Parks said. “There’s just people that are going need to step it up and fill his shoes.”
