Although there was no crackle or pop in Sunday’s first game at Agganis Arena, there sure was a snap, as the Northeastern women’s basketball team ended an 0-6 streak against Boston University.
The ladies started the double-header off on the right note, by handing BU a 70-64 loss.
Freshman Shaleyse Smallwood led all scorers with a career-high 24 points and pulled down six rebounds.
The Huskies leading scorer, junior Maralene Zwarich, was a force in the paint, dropping 12 points and falling just one rebound short of a double-double by grabbing nine boards. Senior forward Francesca Vanin pulled in seven rebounds to add to her 14 points in the winning effort.
The Huskies took a six-point lead heading into the half, but the Terriers fought back in the second behind a strong performance by Adrienne Norris, who scored 13 of her 15 points after the break.
BU pulled within two of NU with 7:13 remaining in the game, but NU would mount a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach for good.
The win brings the Huskies to within one game of BU (11-12, 6-8 AE), the University of Albany (11-12, 6-8 AE) and Stony Brook University (8-15, 6-8 AE).
The next few weeks could see the Huskies (10-13, 5-9 AE) steal some thunder from the men’s team and make a push in the AE tournament.
With three of their final four games coming at home, the Huskies have a legitimate chance of moving up in the standings. Although unlikely, they still could see themselves move from ninth place all the way to fourth if they win out.
It won’t be easy for the Dogs, as all four of their remaining opponents have already beaten NU this season.
The Huskies will look to avenge a Feb. 1 loss to UNH tonight when the Wildcats come to town for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Solomon Court.
UNH edged out NU, 70-64, at Lundholm Gym despite strong efforts from Smallwood and Vanin. Smallwood led all scorers with 20 points while Vanin notched her fourth double-double of the season, with 10 points and a game high 12 rebounds.
