Rowing of a world-wide scale reached the depths of the Charles River in Boston this weekend as the annual Head of the Charles Regatta took place.
Among local schools, the Northeastern men’s and women’s crew teams participated, trying to make a mark in a wide open field.
The Huskies were able to turn in a memorable performance at the national meet. In the championship eight category, the men’s varsity rowing squad finished ninth with a time of 11:14.196. The Cambridge University Boat Club was the overall winner in the event.
The NU club eights men squad placed third in their race while the senior-master eight men, made up of NU alumni, placed fifteenth. The alumni boat was stroked by Rick Schroeder and featured John Maslowski, Pete Karrasick and Brian O’Connor, all of whom were champions in the 1972 Eastern Sprints.
The women’s team also rowed well in the Regatta. The championship eight team placed nineteenth (12:56.026) behind such competitors as US Rowing and Washington State University. Women’s youth fours took fourth, while the alumni, led by Katie Tobin, placed fourteenth in the club eight race.
First held on October 16, 1965, The Head of the Charles Regatta is the largest two-day rowing event in the world. Singer Gavin DeGraw was on hand this year for a free concert to spectators of the event.
More than 300,000 fans are attracted to the event every year, with 7,000 athletes competing in 24 different race events.
