No matter the sport, anytime you put Northeastern against cross-town rival Boston University the game is always intense. Tuesday night at Nickerson Field the women’s soccer team proved that point. Only this time they were playing for the right to continue their season. In the first round of the America East tournament, the No. 5 Huskies beat the No. 4 Terriers 1-0 in a double-overtime thriller.
The game was the seventh overtime game NU has played this season. The Dogs are 4-2-1 in those games.
“We’ve had a lot of overtime games this year,” said junior midfielder Jackie Spellman. “We know what it takes to win those kind of games.”
The Huskies move on to face the No. 1 Binghamton Bearcats Friday at 11 a.m. in Vestal, N.Y.
Despite being outshot 15-4, the Huskies made the one shot that counted in the 107th minute when junior forward Jessie Haidamaka put a shot past BU’s Stephanie Dreyer off a feed by fellow junior Jess Pfeifer. Junior keeper Mariel Wilner made six saves to earn the shutout.
“We were definitely outshot,” Spellman said. “But they took a lot of shots from outside and didn’t have that many good chances.”
The Terriers held the 13-3 shot advantage after regulation but, sensing their season slipping away, the Huskies turned it up a notch in overtime and like they have for the majority of the season, came up with a way to win.
Friday the Huskies will play a Binghamton team that stole the No. 1 seed from them this past Saturday by beating NU 2-0.
“Revenge is on our minds,” Spellman said. “When we lost to them on Saturday we lost first place and home field advantage. We’re going to ride this wave into Friday. We are confident we can win and advance to the championship game.”
