Freshman setter Bree Peterson has been named The Northeastern News Player of the Week days after winning her third America East Volleyball Rookie of the Week award of the season.
Peterson has emerged quickly for the Huskies, as she stands in second place on the team in attack percentage (.294) and has been a key part of a successful run for the Huskies (17-9) as the season winds down.
“The seniors have been very supportive; they’ve called us, and there’s a real camaraderie on the team,” Peterson said, noting the team is close and has worked well together.
Freshman outside hitter Kira Batura, Peterson’s roommate, has won four Rookie of the Week honors this season as well and Peterson and Batura have combined for seven out of nine possible honors.
“It’s a lot of fun; it’s good that she’s my roommate. We communicate real well,” Peterson said.
In three matches last week, Peterson compiled 77 assists, 10 kills, 26 digs, and three blocks. She tied a career-high six kills against Binghamton University in a 3-0 win and set a season-high record for assists in a three-game match with 35 in the same match.
Against Albany, Peterson had 40 assists and a team-high 18 digs, despite the team’s 3-1 loss.
The Huskies have four matches left before the season ends, starting with the University of New Hampshire on Friday (7 p.m.).
“Everybody’s getting in, the hitters are getting a lot of kills,” Peterson said. “Hopefully we’ll go out there and take the rest of our games.”
Peterson, a native of Huntington Beach, Calif., played four years of varsity volleyball at Marina High School, serving as team captain her junior and senior years.
She helped Marina to CIF South Section Championship titles in 2001 and 2002.
