Student groups who need a hand planning lectures, concerts or trips can get all the help they could ask for by walking into the new Student Center for Event Planning.
Located within the Student Activities Office in 228 Curry Student Center, the center offers student groups a “one stop shop for everything [students] need to help them plan an event,” said sophomore communications major Scott Hultman, the center’s event manager and student center co-op.
Once student groups ask for assistance, Hultman processes and monitors all forms and contracts pertaining to an event, including those dealing with university approvals, as well as with insurance coverage.
Since the start of the semester, Hultman has helped plan ski trips for the Downhillers Ski and Snowboard Club, weekly cultural shows for the Cape Verdean Student Association and is in the process of helping to plan the Resident Student Association’s (RSA) annual “Sex Week.”
“[Hultman] was able to pull everything right up for me. [I] didn’t have to bother with the status of contracts,” said Elliot Inz, RSA’s vice president for finance.
As a former work-study student at the Student Activities Office, Hultman said he saw there was a need for a more centralized place for students to come to help with planning their events.
Brooke Tempesta, director of campus activities and programs and now supervisor of the center, saw the same need and put those ideas into action.
“I saw [students] needed a little more availability to do the programming they want to do with people who want to give them a positive experience. I also wanted to have their needs met really quickly,” Tempesta said.
Hultman said he was lucky enough to find a co-op job he really enjoys.
“It’s fun. I get to interact with students and agents for people like Gavin DeGraw and Erin Brockovich. It’s not a boring, stuffy office job,” he said.
Hultman is currently working in the office until June, when his co-op cycle ends. His position is funded through work-study money.
The Center’s hours are Monday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
