On behalf of our student organizations, we publicly state our disagreement with the Council of University Program’s (CUP) decision to remove the Culture and Diversity position. It was stated the position was removed because “most events CUP organizes are diverse and there are many cultural student organizations on campus that bring diverse events to campus.”
Although there are many diverse programs taking place on campus, thanks in part to cultural student organizations, diversity is not only cultural.
Diversity pertains to differences in age, race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, physical ability, thinking style, experience and background. Supporting all of these areas promotes the awareness and insight into the variety and richness that exists within humanity. Actively promoting diversity through programming supports the “richer experience” NU strives to uphold.
